The Tamil Nadu government has decided not to grant permission for new engineering colleges for the time being, citing a surplus of institutions and low student enrolment in many existing ones.

The decision was taken at a Higher Education Department meeting chaired by the Chief Minister.

Tamil Nadu currently has 419 engineering colleges. While top institutions continue to attract students, over 100 struggle to fill seats, with some recording single digit or zero admissions.

This is a step aimed at consolidating and strengthening the existing network of institutions rather than further increasing capacity.

Officials noted that under enrolled colleges have affected education quality. The focus will now be on improving standards rather than expanding numbers.
