To put Gary Sobers's genius in perspective

He played in 93 test matches
As a batting all-rounder, he bowled 21,599 balls in tests
That is 232 balls per test match

To put that in perspective
Anderson : 213 balls per test
Kapil Dev : 212
Steyn : 200
McGrath : 236
Kallis : 122

So he bowled more per test than the average front-line bowler of today, while being one of the all time great batsmen averaging 58!

During the late 60s, after the decline of Hall and Griffith, Sobers was the frontline bowler for West Indies often taking the new ball.

While his bowling average of 34 isn't exceptional, it was under 30 as a seam / swing bowler. The average suffered when he bowled spin

In terms of longevity, he played test cricket for 20 years, in an era when that was quite unusual. He scored runs against Ray Lindwall in the mid 50s, and Dennis Lillee in the early 70s..

His early years were in the old world where many of his opponents had started playing cricket pre-war, and in his evening years he played against cricketers who would carry on till the early 90s

In 74 of his 160 test innings he batted at #6 or lower. Yet managed a career average of 58! Imagine what he could've done without bowling all those donkey overs and being a top order bat at #3 or #4

Both Boycott and Ian Chappell, two of the hardest pundits to please, ranked him as the greatest batsman they ever saw (parking his bowling for a second).

And these two pundits had seen all post-war batsmen from Harvey and Hutton all the way up to Tendulkar, Lara, Smith, Ponting!

🎓 Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Master's degree in IR, International Law and Economics, and PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies

🇫🇷 This Monday and Tuesday we were at the @OECD Future of Development Cooperation Conference, contributing to global conversations on how international development cooperation (IDC) must evolve in response to shifting geopolitical realities and priorities.

We were represented by our Executive Director @MargaritaGomez_, our Head of Research & Innovation Pratyush Sharma, PhD, and our Director of Global Policy Tracy Mamoun. We were also joined by our members from @PlataformaCIPO, @cpdbd1993, @CapriCaribbean, @SDPIPakistan, @Solidartn and online by @ipeaonline and @ISSERUG.

Southern Voice has been shaping the conference through multiple contributions. Our participation in the OECD Expert Group on the Future of IDC, alongside IPEA and Policy Center for the New South, has helped inform the agenda and framing of key discussions. Leading up to the conference, we also convened 3 regional roundtables across Africa, Latin America, and Asia bringing grounded, regional perspectives into global debates. The outcomes of these dialogues are feeding directly into the conference and its official outputs.

We also contributed to key sessions, including moderating a policymaker roundtable on “Maximising impact and managing trade-offs in decision-making,” focused on navigating real-world constraints while strengthening development outcomes. Our work here reflects a broader strategic priority for Southern Voice. The focus on the future of IDC aligns with our goal of actively shaping the 2030 agenda, and connects to core initiatives such as the recently launched Southern Voice on Global Development (SVGD) project.

As these conversations unfold and the global community renegotiates the framework of international cooperation, Global South think tanks must be at the table. Present, but also active. The future of development cooperation must be built with the Global South, not just for it.

India has maintained a long-term equilibrium and balance in BRICS with respect to its share in economy and trade. Going forward, it is expected that India’s consistent economic performance would favourably support BRICS cooperation.

The discussion paper traces specific issues and unique dimensions in detail across major themes viz. multilateralism; economic cooperation and sustainable development; peace and security; institutional development; and people-to-people connect.

Finally, the paper discusses the possible way forward for India’s BRICS Chairship focusing on two issues:
➡️financial cooperation and industrial development for resilience and
➡️economic cooperation and innovation for sustainability.
