The repeated narrative of @jacob_maroga and others that South Africa’s power cuts were caused by a renewables push (informed by the German energiewende), at the expense of coal, misses completely what happened and, more importantly, what’s happening now.
In the severe load shedding period (2019-2023) only the last couple of units of a small very old coal power station - Komati - were shuttered (most units were taken offline in prior years). And relatively modest amounts of renewables were added.
But now the picture is VERY different and it’s happening under the current leadership of the energy ministry and Eskom.
Look at @Eskom_SA’s chart below. South Africa’s power sector is undergoing a profound transformation with massive amounts of solar and wind being added to the grid. 2026 will be a record year for renewable energy investments and the pipeline of projects being funded and built in 2027-29 is huge, driven by economics (not any foreign ideology).
This is not a fairytale. It’s reality.
Much better now to focus on the urgent need for flexible resources to complement the variability of low cost renewables.
The impact of #USAID’s closure on funding-dependent newsrooms has been severe, raising urgent concerns about the sustainability of independent #journalism across Africa.
What needs to happen next?

What a deserving recognition. A strong, intelligent and articulate voice for the world, not just for the developing nations. This ought to be the future UN Secretary General. A woman who can help uplift the organization and multilateralism in general!
A defining recognition for Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, featured in the 100 Most Influential Africans in 2025.
She is a foreign policy expert and CEO of the South African Institute of International Affairs, demanding Africa’s rightful place in global governance and shaping how the Global South influences debates on climate, debt and inequality.

The policy environment is fluid, which requires experimentation. A policy brief or paper is only the beginning of the work. What matters is innovating in outreach, rethinking communication strategies, and building trust within communities. Engagement formats like The #AtlanticDialogues reflect this approach, where knowledge production is part of a broader political space.
Today’s environment requires broadening how stakeholders are understood. Disconnects persist, including in discussions around global forums such as the #G20. Questions are increasingly raised about how funding is used and how policy work is useful, which has led think tanks to engage more directly with #youth.
There are growing movements that see think tanks as disconnected institutions. Even if the policy community considers them useful, this is no longer sufficient. Relevance matters, and think tanks must respond to perceptions that they are distant from broader society.
🔴 @Siderop, Chief Executive of the @SAIIA_info, stresses that think tanks operate within a broader ecosystem. While projects are often expected to deliver specific and visible impact, the reality of policy work is far more complex.

What is the future of the G20 under US leadership? Tune in Thursday morning to hear Lord Jim O’Neill, @BrentNeiman, @Siderop, and @londonvinjamuri analyze this question and more in a virtual conversation. https://t.co/KU1TdRr6gz
In a fractured multilateral system, Elizabeth Sidiropoulos argues that cooperation cannot be an afterthought. Reforming global governance means recognising new centres of power and responsibility — and ensuring Africa has a permanent voice at the table.

Today, South Africa's G20 Sherpa, Mr. Zane Dangor, delivered powerful remarks at the G20 Sherpa meeting, embodying the nation's spirit and vision for its Presidency!
The core message emphasized the strength found in diversity, echoing the South African motto: "United in our diversity." Mr. Dangor stressed that while some may view diversity as an obstacle, South Africa sees it as a profound source of strength over division.
He highlighted that this principle is fundamental to South Africa's approach, seeking to preserve the unity of the G20 group as a collective force. "We look forward to constructive engagement over the next four days to ensure the Leaders' Declaration reflects our collective ambition for a unified, productive global future".
