New Occupational Safety and Health Bill Published in the Government Gazette

The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill, H.B. 6, 2025, gazetted on 8th August, 2025, marks a significant milestone in Zimbabwe's efforts to protect the health and safety of its workforce. This legislation aims to reduce occupational diseases, injuries, and fatalities in all work environments. The Bill has since been transmitted to the Ministry of Public Service and Social Welfare.

A key provision of the OSH Bill, specifically Clause 14(1) is the right to refuse unsafe work. Workers will now have the authority to decline tasks that pose imminent danger to their safety or health without fear of dismissal or punishment. This empowerment will enable workers to take an active role in maintaining a safe working environment.

Clause 13 of the Bill also outlines the responsibilities of employers in ensuring a safe working environment. Employers will be obligated to provide necessary training, conduct risk assessments, and ensure that workers have access to information on workplace safety. This will not only reduce workplace accidents but also foster a culture of safety and responsibility.
