I did not leave India out of anger. I left because, in the early 2000s, becoming a doctor often felt less like a test of merit and more like a test of money, contacts, silence, and luck.
This is just the best piece you'll read on how India lets down its talent.

I started running a decade ago. Every morning, I’d find myself on Carter Road, chasing the ocean breeze. That wind is what made me fall in love with this city and running.
I want to feel it again. And dystopian as it is, I put on a mask before lacing my shoes. It took me back to the pandemic. Except there’s no virus in the air endangering our life. The air itself could kill us.
I never imagined a day when the very thing we breathe to survive would become a luxury. My doors and windows stay shut. I bought an air purifier. I moved my runs to a treadmill, staring at a wall instead of the sea. And it still isn’t enough.
Running is the thing that keeps me whole. It clears my head. It heals something in me that nothing else reaches. But now the act I built my life around feels like it’s quietly destroying me. Pollution is undoing what years of discipline and sweat and devotion built, one breath at a time.
This isn’t seasonal anymore. It shouldn’t be political. But somewhere between the data and the denial, people like me are out there in masks, grieving a morning run, mourning a city we loved.
Is basic accountability really too much to ask for?
It's time to remove laptops from classrooms.
24 experiments: Students learn more and get better grades after taking notes by hand than typing. It's not just because they're less distracted—writing enables deeper processing and more images.

A senior super-specialist professor being paid 1.3 lakhs/ month reflects the sad state of affairs. This is the reality with government health professionals in almost all states. This is a structural problem that equates highly skilled professional with generalist file-manager by virtue of the pay-grade. Recognising the contemporary market realities, the salary structure of health professionals must be distinct from all other departments and shall be indexed with the private sector.
Many doctors work for professional reward rather than monetary returns, Dr @Jasonphilip8 being one such. However, what really toxic is the dictatorship of clerks in the health department; honest doctors are harassed endlessly for getting their annual entitlements. Yes, this must be automated, which is a simple solution. But is not being done in several states.
As principal secretary of health and later finance, I mitigated the clerical harassment by automating the entire financial management system #CFMS. However, structural issue of 'unique pay structure' for health professionals was not done because of 'political reluctance'.
I believe all governments must review these issues that have a major bearing on the effective delivery of quality health to citizens. Health must not be measured in terms of money.

This is the salary, The Govt of Tamilnadu gives me: My latest pay slip( after nearly 3 decades of service, MCh degree & 275 kidney transplants ). U can see that the Gross is 1.6 lacs,& take home is 1.3 lacs. The correct salary must be much, much more than 2.5 lacs, but clerical corruption in the TN Health Dept hs limited it to this. As a rule, I never give bribes, so I suffer.
Can this spring-loaded syringe transform how we teach epidural blocks?
A pilot study from Stanford tested the EpiFaith® Smart syringe - a novel, automated loss-of-resistance (LOR) tech - and the results are eye-opening.

The gap between wanting to win and actually winning is filled with work that nobody will notice. No appreciation, no acknowledgement. Most people quit here.
Folks, did you realise that @amazonIN has made it impossible to find the 'contact us' or 'chat with us' on the customer service tab? 15 mins on the App and web and I am still searching for it. Or they seem to have deleted it altogether. It keeps sending you in circles.
Life is strange. You arrive with nothing, spend your whole life chasing everything, and still leave with nothing. Make sure your soul gains more than your hands.
What you do in private, shows in public. Reading shows in a conversation. Your diet shows in energy. Your discipline shows in confidence. Your focus shows in your results. You are what you cultivate when no one is watching. Prioritize your time & focus on discipline/consistency.
I’m convinced that everyone should take a big swing at some point in their life and experience what it’s like to truly go all in on a meaningful pursuit otherwise they grow bitter with age.
Secret weapon for life: Be the type of person who's easy to be around. Speak when it adds value. Be quiet when you have something to learn. Stay calm when things go sideways. Laugh more than you complain. Most of all, be steady. Steady wins trust. Trust wins everything.
