Many enjoy working with military members and like the structure in the DoD (I can't say the same for all agencies; some better, some worse). The biggest reasons many stay is opportunity to move up in grade, good insurance, good retirement and stability, and you still get to serve your country and have that sense of making a difference. Many also just grew up in military families, served in the military, or wanted to be in the military and for some reason or another couldn’t. It Pays better than a server at a restaurant, but the equivalent work in the civilian sector definitely makes more money. Even a contractor for the federal government makes more than GS employee doing the same job, but those positions are not stable.

It can be approved as long as it meets the ethics guidelines and it doesn’t interfere with your federal position, which comes first.
