Just finished reading “Microflora Danica: the atlas of Danish environmental microbiomes” by @MadsAlbertsen85 and many more. What an incredible resource for all future microbial ecology studies! Thanks to all researchers and funding that came together for this.
Our massive project "Microflora Danica: the atlas of Danish environmental microbiomes" is online!
5 years ago @PerHNielsen and I started the project of our dreams! To reveal the microbes of an entire country! But, why? 🧵Read on 1/

David Penny and collaborators influenced much of my scientific curiosity and thinking. Sad to discover he passed. Thank you for your work!
Cannot recommend enough his papers from the late 90s early 00s.
I’d like to thank all authors, and in particular @s_mills03 who led the writing and submission.
Finally I’d like to thank @scienceirel who financially supported this work!
My first peer-reviewed publication!

Johnson & Johnson has inexcusably extended their 20 years patent on Bedaquiline, an essential drug to cure multidrug resistant tuberculosis (TB is currently the deadliest infection worldwide). More info:

@waitbutwhy@lexfridman How did I miss it?!? People go listen to this inspiring conversation:

@waitbutwhy Great book @waitbutwhy! Thanks for it!
I hope for a discussion between you and @lexfridman on the topic. As well as a wider discussion for a global perspective! Again thanks for the book! Will recommend to anyone I know! 💜
#Ireland is not a ideal place to do #PhD. No employee status and the stipends are lower than the minimum wage. non-EU researchers like myself face a 1000€ yearly research expense for the residence permit and mandatory health insurance that @scienceirel refuses to reimburse.
@JacquieLudwig I’ll keep both platform until one is not useful any longer. At the moment, I’m finding different inputs (papers to read, points of discussion, etc) on both, so it’s worth keeping the two.
Everyone moving from twitter to mastodon is very likely to fail because it is a collective action problem, benefits depend on others actions.
Here's how it can succeed. It will require your commitment for 1 month to do a few things. Read and retweet if you commit to do them.
I am very proud of this work. We put together publicly available sequencing data (plus more data kindly provided by several colleagues) to perform the first meta-analysis of microbial electro synthesis. Thanks to all coauthors for the great job, and in particular to @s_mills03
A long day, with many moments of fear 😨 and heavy debugging; but finally the first minION run is on and looking promising! 🎉🎉🎉 thanks @Alex_deMenezes for letting me work on this with you!

I finished my PhD about 2 months ago, and I just want to share that:
*I spent >5 of 6yrs convinced that I was uniquely behind or lost or dumb
*I worked 50+hrs some weeks but 15 others
*Rest and hobbies helped my science
Struggling doesn't mean you don't belong.
