8/ As part of the recommendations, @WHO invites those working across academia, private and public sectors to harness and invest in research and innovation in relation to rehabilitation – inclusive of assistive technologies.
7/ On the 2nd February the @WHO#EB152 recognised rehabilitation to be essential in meeting the #SDGs and requires increased attention from policy makers and international actors when setting health priorities and allocating resources.
6/ The potential of VR as a tool for #rehabilitation is particularly interesting at present, where last week the @WHO#EB152 reached consensus on key steps to strengthen rehabilitation as an essential component of #UHC.
5/ Andreas will be focusing his PhD research on people with upper limb dystonia and will utilise interviews with patients to understand their functional priorities and motivations which will help to inform possible solutions.
4/@primevr2 is aimed at creating a digital environment using VR to embed within rehabilitation programmes. Using VR, patients can benefit from bespoke controllers to carry out exercises that support with their strength and movement.
3/ Andreas’ work is part of the wider @primevr2 project which is by the European Commission, under the Horizon 2020 initiative. This is a collaborative project, with a combination of academic and industrial partners working alongside hospitals and rehabilitation centres.
2/ Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that causes uncontrollable and, often painful, muscle spasms. It is an under-researched area of medicine, and people with dystonia can respond to different treatments to varying degrees.
