Brazilian football coach Jorvan Vieira, best known for leading Iraq to their historic 2007 AFC Asian Cup victory, embraced Islam during his coaching career in Morocco years before his success with the Iraqi national team.
Vieira has stated that his conversion was a personal spiritual decision and rejected claims that he embraced Islam solely because of his Moroccan wife.
According to statements attributed to him that have circulated in various media and social media posts, Vieira was impressed by the remarkable consistency of Islamic worship around the world. He reportedly observed that Muslims in different countries performed Wudu (ablution) and Salah (prayer) in the same manner, which gave him a strong sense of unity, order, and structure within the faith.
Vieira remains one of the most respected figures in Asian football, having guided Iraq to their historic AFC Asian Cup triumph in 2007.
Note: Vieira's conversion to Islam is well documented. However, some of the detailed accounts regarding the specific factors that influenced his decision are based on widely circulated reports and should be treated with appropriate caution unless verified through direct interviews.
The Safe Schools Initiative to improve security around schools was launched in the aftermath of the Chibok abductions. Amnesty International strongly condemns violent attacks on peaceful protesters on Tuesday 2 June in Ibadan Oyo state. A group apparently sponsored violently disrupted the peaceful protest seeking an end to the shameful consistent abduction of school children nationwide.
The protesters were marching from Mokola towards Bodija area when they were disrupted and attacked at Sango area of Ibadan. Many protesters were injured, cars vandalized and personal belongings snatched.
The protest tagged: #BringBackOurPupilsAndTeachers organised by the Take It Back Movement is a nationwide advocacy solely aimed at bringing attention to the failure of Nigerian authorities to protect children and schools from rampaging gunmen.
A pattern of state authorities sponsoring thugs to disrupt and attack peaceful protesters is increasingly undermining the right to peaceful assembly in Nigeria.
The authorities must investigate this incident and ensure that the attackers are held to account in fair trials.
People must be able to freely exercise their right to peaceful protest. Any act capable of undermining freedom of assembly is illegal and portrays unacceptable intolerance of peaceful dissent.
