A little dollop of heat pump intel for a Friday.
We'll probably get to hear more about "mini split" systems.. like this new one that has just launched in the US

@ronnytodgers@EvanHD BTW this was totally unintuitive to me when I started on this! At the beginning it just feels like fewer/bigger outdoor units should be better. But they really aren’t. My cofounder Bill installed a 7:1 Mitsubishi ductless in his home before we started Quilt and he regrets it.
This was an intentional design choice. The system gets more efficient, quiet, and reliable as you get closer to a 1:1 ratio. The main problem is that when you have a large outdoor unit the compressor in it needs to really large to, so it can heat an entire home on the coldest day. But on an average day, when you’re only using 1 or 2 rooms, it’s way way too large and both burns excess energy and cause annoying “temperature swings”. They are also more complex to install and less reliable. Finally multiple outdoor units is better for resilience because if something breaks you’re not entirely without heat, just a room or two. We experimented and found that 2:1 was the sweet spot for a highly efficient, reliable system that is also scalable (can work in any size home by having multiple outdoor units).
@vidholf@drvolts I should say "most" pets and much smaller than "most" people (as someone who has a 2-year old running around my house, should know better ;))
Longtime listener first time interviewee! I had a lot of fun speaking with @drvolts . He got into all my favorite technical gotchas and surprises. LMK if you have any follow up Qs!
Not that minor! Pet detection is actually a big area of focus in tuning these sensors. Things we have going for us: 1) Pets are much smaller than people, 2) They have different movement patterns, 3) The system overall can bias towards accepting false positives over false negatives
Just signed up to get this amazing heat pump system in our NH home.
To my New England peeps - we NEED this here so we can ditch our oil boilers. If you’re ready for heat pumps, pre-order yours today so we can convince Quilt to come to New England ASAP.
"Let's have the product be something that feels like a treat in your home. It should be beautiful. It should do everything you'd be used to a smart thermostat doing, and more." — Quilt founder Paul Lambert https://t.co/Pfqx7npKzc
@rjonesy@Stammy We have a 12 year warranty, which as long as the very best in the industry but go beyond because our warranty doesn’t invalidate when the house is sold (most HP warranties do). We built this to last.
Tomorrow is the day: For the past two years, the Quilt team has been working incredibly hard to create the best product I’ve ever been a part of. And tomorrow we’re (finally!) going to tell you all about it. Livestream starts at 9:30am. Find it here: https://t.co/iuEIAGmy9E
