Mickey Mantle making a 2 handed catch near the Monuments. The three monuments were located inside the field of play until 1973. They honored Miller Huggins, Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth, often requiring outfielders to run around them to field balls.
The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora, hitting coach Peter Fatse, bench coach Rámon Vazquez and game-planning coach Jason Varitek, sources tell ESPN.
While the Red Sox won today, they are 10-17 and in last in the American League East. Massive change is coming in Boston.
Luis Tiant holds his father's jacket as he throws the ceremonial first pitch before the game at Fenway Park August 26, 1975. The Tiants had been separated since 1961 due to the severing of U.S.-Cuban diplomatic relations. It took a letter from U.S. Senator Edward Brooke to Fidel Castro—appealing to Castro's love of the game—to finally reunite the family. The elder Tiant, a legendary left-handed pitcher who had been a star for the New York Cubans in the Negro Leagues, wasn't satisfied with his first toss. He asked for the ball back and, at 69 years old, next pitch was right over the plate to the roar of a sold-out crowd.
Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz is slated to undergo surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, according to a source. The expectation is he’ll miss somewhere in the neighborhood of three months.
@FabianArdaya was first on the procedure.
Today we honor the legacy of Jackie Robinson, who debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers OTD in 1947.
We celebrate his courage and determination, his brilliance on the baseball diamond, and his grace and dignity beyond the playing field.
Jackie’s influence has spanned the generations. From the legends who followed, to the current greats, and the stars of tomorrow. We are all grateful for all he gave to our game. #Jackie42
As someone who has been very vocal about Irish and Italian heritage nights at Citi Field, I’m very concerned about the #Mets apparent decision to not have Jewish Heritage Night in the schedule.
A great number of my friends and followers are Jewish and they are understandably upset at this decision.
I’m hoping @StevenACohen2 addresses this issue with the #Mets promotion staff and rectifies the situation in a timely manner.
Mets have done a horrible Job not having a Hall of Fame museum in the ballpark. Having plaques on walls in the rotunda is not a hall of fame it's a walk of fame. Very disappointed the team doesn't honor their history the right way.#lgm
I hope, I'm wrong but people are overrating the Mets. Mets are a 75-85 win team not a championship team. Their bench is horrible and they have lost a lot of production at key positions. The Dodgers roster is way superior no way Mets overthrow the Dodgers in NL.#openingday#lgm
