Defence pacts don’t prevent wars, they determine who gets pulled into someone else’s war.
NATO deterred Moscow not because of the ink on a treaty, but because the Soviet Union feared the cost of confronting its members. SEATO and CENTO similarly gave Pakistan diplomatic assurances, but no meaningful military intervention came in 1965 or 1971. A defence pact deters only when the guarantor’s interests and fear of the consequences match the client’s. Otherwise, it is little more than a promise written for the archive, not the battlefield.

Blocking motorways and highways for the benefit of the public causes more harm than good. Yesterday, hundreds of vehicles were stranded at the Peshawar toll plaza because it was blocked. Those heading to Islamabad were stranded and had to take longer routes to reach their destinations. If those blocking the roads believe this will make them popular, it definitely will not.

The Powell Doctrine says use military force only as a last resort, with overwhelming power, a clear objective, broad domestic and international support, and a defined exit strategy. Thirteen consecutive nights of strikes against Iran, without congressional authorisation, with munitions running low, no clear post-conflict plan, and a return to the same June framework, violates virtually every condition Powell identified. One of the last Tangas somewhere on the outskirts of Peshawar waiting for passengers. We used to go to school in a Tanga in Bannu. What a regal ride. I remember asking the Kochwan named Saifullah to give us the reins so we could get the feel. Sadly, they are now completely extinct.

The police are primarily a law enforcement agency, not a combat arm, yet they have been compelled to confront heavily armed terrorists. Deployed in every nook and corner of the province, they have often become the easiest targets while continuing to protect the public. The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Peshawar have announced the results of the annual Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, revealing a deeply concerning picture of educational outcomes. According to the official result gazette, 95,496 students appeared in the Grade 10 examinations. Of these, 66,988 passed, while 27,788, nearly 30 per cent failed to qualify. The Grade 9 results were even more alarming. Out of 97,950 students who sat the examination, only 39,103, or around 40 per cent, passed, meaning that nearly six out of every ten students failed. These figures highlight serious challenges in the quality of school education and underscore the urgent need for reforms in teaching standards, curriculum delivery, and student learning outcomes rather than celebrating isolated success stories.

Provincial governments in Pakistan have consistently resisted establishing and genuinely empowering local governments, fearing the erosion of their political influence, administrative authority, and control over development funds. Although Article 140-A of the Constitution mandates an effective local government system, power remains heavily centralized. Unless and until provinces are willing to devolve real political, administrative, and financial authority to elected local bodies, grassroots democracy will remain weak, public participation limited, and service delivery suboptimal.

بطور سرجن ہمارا زیادہ کام اور وقت انسانی خون، گوشت/اعضاء/دماغ کےساتھ گزرتا ہے۔ جس دن سرجری نا کریں کمی سی محسوس ہوتی ہے۔ نیوروسرجری خاص کر دماغ کے نازک حصوں کے آپریشن کیلئے ویسے بھی مضبوط اعصاب درکار ہوتے ہیں۔۔

لیکن

انسانی جان کو یوں خون میں لت پت دیکھ کر میرے اعصاب جواب دے رہے ہیں۔۔ آج کبل سوات، کل وزیرستان، پرسوں ہنگو۔۔ذہن ماؤف ہوگیا ہے۔۔ سمجھ نہیں آ رہی ہے کہ کہاں جاؤں۔کدھر سر چھپاؤں۔۔کیوں انسان کی جان اتنی بے وقعت ہوگئ ہے۔ آج یہ ہیں کل ہم ہونگے ایسے کسی دھماکہ کے نمبر شمار میں۔۔

جو دوست ڈاکٹر باہر گئے ہیں ان کو پاکستان/اپنا گھر لوگ یاد آرہے ہیں اور ہم جو باہر جانے کی سکت رکھتے اور مواقع ملتے ہوئے بھی اپنی دھرتی اور اپنے لوگوں کی محبت میں یہیں خدمت کرنے رہ گئے اب عجیب مخمصے کا شکار ہے ۔

Looks like grief and tragedy have found their way to Shangla and Swat. First, it was 34 mine workers who lost their lives in Balochistan and now the blast in Kabal. It is as if sorrow keeps finding its way back to the same people. My heart goes out to the bereaved families. May God grant the departed eternal peace, give strength to those left behind, and protect these valleys from further heartbreak.
