Put sentence patterns first. Humans chunk everything into patterns. The larger the chunk, the lighter the load on working memory as we process language. However, if you put the teaching of single words and conjugations first you will raise a breed of slow and hesitant speakers.
We are approaching the end of our 'Picasso Project' in Y8 and I am just so proud of the #creatvity and #accuracy shown by these students. This whole topic was delivered via @gianfrancocont9 MARS EARS method which has been a huge success so far! @PrincipalMuscat@BSMuscat
More than 575,000 people in Australia are blind or have low vision, and teenager Luca Weber is among them. But fewer than a quarter are in full-time work, so Luca has started his own business. https://t.co/q20eesniwK
A very nice set of templates created by @santovenaMFL (who has recently completed an MA in #EPI) for many of EPI classic games/activities.
Brilliant work. Very handy for #EPI teachers.
Input enhancement, both textual and acoustic, can be very effective in phonology instruction, especially when combined with input flooding and engaging phonological awareness-raising activities (e.g. Faulty echo, Spot the error, Track the sound, Finish my word, Rhyming pairs,...)
There’s so much that another language could mean to you. It could be a chat with your new best friend, your new favourite song, a book you just can’t put down, food you’ve never tried before, breathtaking scenery, endless new opportunities. Another language is a whole new world.
Exciting news! https://t.co/VD8cqbjbaI is now officially launched. You can actually already subscribe! @MartinLapworth@MrVinalesMFL@JezequelR @Gianfra09080952
As I have often reiterated, grammar can emerge organically and effortlessly from masses of exposure and usage, as far as one uses the right techniques. Many thanks to HJ for this testimonial.
Grammar is key, but must serve communication and fluency.
We become fluent by chunking words in meaningful and rapidly-available multi-word units after lots of exposure and usage.
Teach grammar AFTER your Ss have learnt those units. It is more natural, engaging and effective.
Do you remember the first time you learnt that Spanish had TWO verbs ‘to be’ or that a book was neuter in German, feminine in Russian & masculine in French & languages blew your mind? It’s no wonder we love passing on our passion for languages.
Navajo was used as a secret code during World War 2. Basque & Icelandic have changed so little that they’re virtual linguistic time machines & Welsh could well have been the mystic language of King Arthur. There’s an adventure to be found in every language. #lovelanguages
