Somewhere along the way, we started treating teachers who work nights and weekends as though they're more committed than those who go home at the end of the day.
But staying late doesn't automatically make someone a better educator.
You can plan thoughtful lessons, build strong relationships with students, and take your responsibilities seriously without giving every available hour to your job.
There will be days when the work requires more of your time. That's part of teaching. But when staying late becomes the expectation rather than the exception, something needs to change.
Your family, your friends, your hobbies, and the things you enjoy outside of school deserve your attention, too.
You shouldn't have to choose between being the teacher your students need and having a life you enjoy.
Twenty five years later, September 11 still deserves more than a passing mention.
We remember the people who never came home and the families whose lives changed forever. We remember the first responders and everyday people who stepped forward when others needed them most.
Some days do not need a lesson attached to them. They simply deserve to be remembered.
Schools are very good at finding one more thing for teachers to do.
Another initiative, committee, coverage assignment, training, duty, or responsibility might sound small on its own. Keep adding them without increasing compensation, time, or support, though, and eventually the job becomes bigger while the paycheck stays exactly the same.
If the work is valuable enough to require, the people doing it should be valued accordingly.

3 ways to build rapport with teachers:
1) Spend some time appreciating their instruction... not just critiquing it.
2) Spend some time asking them about their family.
3) Spend some time laughing & cutting up with them.
Note: To build rapport... you have to spend some time.
