#EDU6323 Two of my colleagues have implemente VR into two of our foundational Spanish classes, so next time I teach those I’ll get to experience it too. I watched a demo and it is a great tool for some fun activities students can do, like practice vocabulary in a virtual home
#EDU6323 As I watched Kelly’s video I kept thinking of Amazon, and if it should be considered a gatekeeper too. Besides controlling online shopping, they also have access to a lot of customer’s information… do you think Kelly should also consider Amazon a gatekeeper?
@stephanie_frad Yes! Sometimes I wonder how much more engaged I would have been in middle school or high school if we had had anonymous polls, online discussion boards, etc...
I definitely think polling can increase student motivation because it can involve them in the process of selecting or even creating learning materials. For instance, for my assignment revamp this week, I am polling students on the possible topics for an essay #EDU6323
#EDU6323 Not sure if somebody has mentioned it yet, but Office 365 is great for online collaboration. OneNote in particularly has been very useful in some of my classes.
@jessvalli@SpiehlerWhitney Pretty much any site that pushes content (posts) uses RSS. You simply need to add the site you want to your feeds (NYT, Variety, Buzzfeed, etc) and the content will start coming in. #EDU6323
@KatieMu76677376@nms_elearning All my classes for the past three semesters have been remote synchronous, so students wouldn’t be using Slack during class except when I would upload a slide or an exercise. Either way, it’s as distracting as email, I guess #EDU6323
@EmilyAHopkins@nms_elearning I teach college students. I think Slack might be a bit too business-oriented for younger students, but I’m pretty sure there are similar tools geared for K-12
@nms_elearning I agree with you, and in my experience using Slack as a supplemental tool (not instead of an LMS) has made it very easy to safely and quickly communicate with students. It was so popular last year, that my office hours turned into "Slack hours". #EDU6323
@SpiehlerWhitney @CaitlinGoldblum @NEULauraC@edmodo Thank you for sharing this resource! I had never heard of it, but it seems quite simple, plus it is free.
@SpiehlerWhitney I do use them for both. For instance, I have a feed for photography, one of my main hobbies, then I have some for Latin American news outlets to help me stay current and find articles to assign for some of my classes, and I also have one just for literature blogs #EDU6323
#EDU6323 Hi all! I’ve been using RSS feeds for a very long time! I’ve been using Feedly for the past few years, but had several other apps before. I normally use them on my iPad and Android phone. I love having separate feeds for different topics.
@NEULauraC#EDU6323 Separating work from "play" is also what has stopped me from incorporating Insta or FB into my classes. I don;t feel the same with Twitter because I don't use it much, but I htink so far Slack has been the answer to keep things separated.
#EDU6323 Since using Twitter for this class I’ve been thinking about incorporating a similar element to my classes, but I think I’m going to stick to Slack for now and make it a requirement to make posts and comments once a week. #3/3
#EDU6323 Stellar is being faced out, so Canvas will be the only option. @ the University of Kansas I used BlackBoard, and it has been my preferred LMS. In my classes @ MIT I started using Slack during pandemic, and decided I’ll continue to use it when we go back to in person 2/
I use Canvas @ MIT. It was implemented for all during the pandemic, but I was one of the testers for a couple of years. Before that we had to use our own LMS developed in-house, “Stellar”. Very bare bones but I like it a lot. #EDU6323 1/
@EmilyAHopkins I don’t think there’s a difference. I believe some developers don’t use the rss name just so it does not sound foreign to those not familiar with the acronym. #EDU6323
@LouriNieman@jessvalli Just today I was looking at Diigo alternatives and also ran into Pocket! I already installed it on my iPad, but haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I also downloaded Evernote, which I had used many years ago, and looks like it has evolved quite a bit.
