UBL has officially become Pakistan’s largest bank by deposits. After a record breaking 15-month run including a massive profit for the first quarter of 2026, the bank has taken a thin lead over HBL, which saw a reduction in deposits in the same period. But how did UBL get here?
The growth story has hinged around a top-down approach by the bank’s leadership. The instructions from the top are to get as many current accounts as possible and offer other freebies and incentives to achieve that single-focused goal, as long as the overall deal makes a profit for UBL. For meeting these goals, a regional head has been given a Land Cruiser LC300 worth approx Rs 80- 90 million as his official car (the same car that the President is entitled to) as a reward for achieving a current account portfolio of Rs 300 billion. "This is the official policy now: if you can grow your current account portfolio to Rs 300 billion, you get an LC 300 from the bank." A certain executive in the UAE branch was even given a Porsche by the bank for securing a large account.
But that is not the extent of it. Read more at: https://t.co/Rk7M57u4qc
