Working in conservation of British Owls - habitat restoration, surveying, citizen science & education etc & increasing our understanding & connection with them
Natural Flood Management
Making space for water, storing it safely in the landscape is something that needs to be addressed across the country, as we face more extreme weather events.
1 NFM measure is reconnecting rivers to their floodplain, like our Og Rewiggling project. #NFM
The key things you need to do to make ecological restoration successful:
1. Address the problems faced at *source*
2. Address problems at the scale at which they occur
3. Use natural processes as much as possible - nature does it best
Who could ever have guessed that the policy of burying millions of tonnes of filthy waste in the ground might come back to bite us in the arse?

The saddest compilation video I have ever made. But perhaps also the most positive if it causes a reduction in plastic pollution in 2024. In once pristine seas, every nearshore plankton sample I now collect contains plastic microfibers. (Sound On) @zeiss_micro
Our new research finds that spot-on flea treatments on pets are a major source of river contamination with potent insecticides. Also, owners hands are continually contaminated by contact with treated pets. Pls RT (1/2)

@DaveGoulson@roseofgoodhope @PAN_UK It's not just handwashing, the pollution occurs when treated dogs go into our watercourses to swim or play. I haven't used flea treatment on my dogs for years and haven't had a flea problem. I would only treat if they get and infestation.
Excellent to hear of @nationaltrust plans to expand temperate rainforest sites in north Devon, though obviously hoping these plans involve lots of natural regeneration, not just planting: @NT_Pat @Wood_Barley can you share more? https://t.co/H8EkxNXyBd
Apparently this madness actually is real. An election leaflet from local MP Mrs Flick Drummond
Constituents asked to stop emptying their baths, flushing the loo or "using machines during heavy downpours" to help stop the sewage system dumping sh*t into the nearest river. WOW!
These rivers have all tested +ve for thiamethoxam since 2020 (data from Env Agency). This neonicotinoid was banned in Europe in 2018, but is allowed on sugar beet crops in UK. That is its only authorised use. Yet it is turning up in rivers all over the place... Hugely concerning.
There have been 65 Kings & Queens of England since Aethelstan became the 1st in the year 927
This tree hasn’t just witnessed all of them, it was born up to 2,000 years BEFORE Aethelstan
The Linton Yew, Herefordshire
Now there is an incredible woman right there. Jo Bateman is taking @SouthWestWater to court, she's simply "Had enough". 👏👏👏
If I can help in anyway just shout.
To all you developers out there. To all you money greedy men in suits. To all of you that don’t give a toss about the natural world, stop felling the lungs of our planet! Trees are amazing & we need them. Enlighten yourselves and go & read a book about the ways that trees give life to our planet & provide vital homes/habitats for wildlife. A magnificent Sycamore tree I saw yesterday in 🏴 of some 250-300 years old. Truly awe inspiring. I can’t say I’ve ever seen a root plate like that! 😍❤️🌳
"Sewage dumped in rivers by Thames Water increases fivefold."
Wonder how that govt plan for water thing is going, you remember, all that cracking down nonsense, holding fat cat industry bosses to account, greenest govt ever, blah, blah, blah?

Burning also exacerbates the climate and nature crises, and our lack of healthy bogs is making down-valley flooding more frequent and worse.
We need to protect natural flood defences like our peatlands to mitigate the worst effects of the climate emergency.
