In many ways it already dictates creativity. Artists already need to try and make social media algorithms work for them, which likely effects their writing.

@AuburnAffect I refer more to the industry than intention. One could have the purest artistic intention, who creates a record that falls on deaf ears.

Nailed it. While I personally found the marketing/PR aspect of running my own band to be very interesting, it sucked out huge swathes of time that should have been spent writing something good, and in the end the entire project ground to a halt.

@hollyherndon Music as a *thing* seems to have changed so much. It's less of an art form and a shared experience between creator and listener and more of a consumer product. It seems a lot of listeners don't want engagement, they want Spotify playlists to fill the silence.

@hollyherndon Completely agreed. The rather unfortunate prevailing opinion is that the onus ought to be on artists to harass the public into listening to our work. That we need to prove ourselves beyond the fact that we've already worked so hard just to make something in the first place.
