@haugejostein Those are not the fight bumbers. Just to take the first one: Elsevier did make about 3B£ in operating profits in 2023, but it was across its business. The database, research & academic publishing branch made ca. 1.1B£ in profits - not sure how much of it was for peer review.

@PowerAbuses @intellectronica @StefanFSchubert My feeling is that defunding the police is seen by proponents not as the goal (once we don't need it anyway), but part of the solution. On fossil fuels, too, the phasing out can be an active component of the proposed path forward.

@intellectronica @StefanFSchubert Just to add that I think the first part of the quoted tweet does make absolute sense - abolishing prisons/defunding police is the headline measure, not all there is meant to be. Not sure "literal interpretation" is a helpful tool here.

"Defund the police" seems to be the former, "I want a world where nobody is poor" is clearly the latter. Yes, there's much room for motte & bailey, but such statements are hardly ever meant to be exhaustive.
