Writing this to draw attention internationally to biases &discrimination for benefit of next generation applying, including people I have mentored, my three daughters and in memory of Prof Elizabeth Murray- a passionate champion of women-who taught women to be as good as they can
I wrote to them in Nov 2020-they said they would call- to discuss. I am still waiting to hear from them. I am not alone in this experience-colleagues who applied to NIHR & received comments which suggested that their less than full time training was not looked upon favourably.
I wrote a formal response with the backing of my Professors Elizabeth Murray @osborn_ucl at UCL to @NIHRresearch after their public announcement 2improve diversity&inclusion in health research, as comments I received were not in accordance with the NIHR’s stated broader aims.
The year I applied the application was deemed fundable but due to Covid and “to the financial restraints at this time, only the top-ranked candidates were funded.”
I had 8 peer reviewed publications in that period including a first author publication @TheLancetPsych , MSc in @MentalhealthMSc@UCL, in my maternity leave, for which I received a distinction and I had won psychiatry trainee of the year at RCPsych awards in 2019.
Superficially looks like 10 years when taking account for maternity leave & less than full time training it is only 3 years. The comment is coming from the perspective of someone who is observing the years across which training took place, rather than time spent in training.
“Has 8 publications in last 10 years which shows some research output nut not a great deal (sic). I would expect more from a research active medic in such a period.”
“No grants (time out with two pregnancies)”
“Training is very London based”
I am an Iranian female psychiatrist who came to England as child refugee in 1984.I grew up in council estate & state school educated.I applied to the NIHR for doctoral fellowship-feedback from a predominantly white male interview panel (with no people of colour) direct quotes:
@docgolnar @bmj_latest@NIHRresearch Golnar your courage in speaking out is inspiring. I am horrified by your experience. Will do something to help & be in touch
"The pandemic has revealed how the medical-political complex can be manipulated in an emergency—a time when it is even more important to safeguard science"

Three cheers (or more) for our offspring’s English teacher. It was day 1 back at school and apparently the teacher got them looking at Simon Armitage’s latest about the virus and plague. Poetry now!
