No lives are disposable. #HomelessCantStayHome
Last month Picture Homeless held its annual Longest Night event to remember and celebrate the lives of the people who have passed over the past year. We hold them in our hearts and will continue the struggle for the rights and lives of homeless people in their names.
We are excited to announce that the Free To Pee Campaign is back! Vocal NY Homelessness Union and Picture the Homeless are working together to revive this campaign.
If you’re able to come through today for the action it will be held at Fordham Plaza at 12pm.
We're joining homeless NYers + advocates for July #HomelessRightsMonth, calling on the city and state to: 1) Stop the sweeps 2) Fast-track housing 3) Provide shelter with privacy and dignity! Join us at actions this month & follow #HomelessRightsMonth to stay updated!
This past weekend a memorial service was held for Althea York, a PTH member who passed away. The service was held at Powell Gardens where Althea spent a lot of time. She was a part of housing campaigns and the work PTH did on a Community Land Trust. We share this in her memory.
Across the street from the 75th precinct in East New York is a publicly owned lot that the city just allows the precinct to use to park police cars. PTH went to an action to support the people creating spaces for the community to thrive.
On May 1st Picture the Homeless members joined labor organizers and other groups for May Day to support the fight for labor unions and worker rights.
PTH supports the struggle of workers to fight for a living wage, good working conditions, and to have their voices heard.
On April 20th PTH and other groups went to Tompkins Square Park to tell Eric Adams to STOP THE SWEEPS.
The Adams administration continues destroying homeless communities, throwing away their belongings, and pushing them into crowded shelters.
Spread the word - STOP THE SWEEPS!
On Tuesday, April 12th PTH, Vocal NY @vocalnewyork , and other organizations did an action to protest and spread awareness about the anti-homeless policies Eric Adams and his administration are implementing.
Happening Today at 11:30am! Join Vocal NY, Picture the Homeless, Neighbors Together, Urban Justice Center, and others to support homeless New Yorkers and the fight for permanent housing.

"He had an uncanny knack for bridging gaps... He united ppl in homeless shelters with those living on the streets...& trained them all to speak to city officials, often spending the night with them in the office and ironing their clothes before important meetings"
Beautiful and intimate @NYTObits tribute to Nikita Price, beloved organizer, father, and friend. Thank you to @johnleland for sharing Nikita with the world.
We miss him so much.

Brave and important open letter from @NYCDHS workers. Homeless people know that NYPD cannot and SHOULD not be involved in service provision, and DHS employees know it too.
NYC Homeless Services Workers demand that all money used to fund police involvement with homeless outreach be immediately redirected to social services and housing.

These demands echo the findings just published in #HomelessCantStayHome report.
Hot off the virtual "presses"!
#HomelessCantStayHome report on what defunding the NYPD means for homeless ppl's safety, privacy and dignity--& how over $100 mil. in funds used to police and harass the homeless could be better spent on ENDING homelessness

this got 1000% worse during COVID19 as all of the restaurants and public spaces that people used to rely on for bathrooms were suddenly closed.
The city took over a month to provide even rudimentary mobile bathrooms.
THIS and also: SO tired of a framing that inevitably blames homeless people--or for that matter, anyone--for urinating in public places when the city has failed to provide free public bathrooms that would instantly solve this problem (if it even exists.)
