Given it took the UK a week to deploy a single major warship to defend Cyprus, our one operational attack submarine was sent to Australia & the @royalnavy just moved its last crewed minehunter back to the UK from the Gulf for maintenance, the government’s options to help defend shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will be limited.

This is the dangerous reality of decades of defence cuts to our three armed services - and a failure by @DefenceHQ to spend a still substantial defence budget well - playing out in real time while a war is raging.

So many of us have warned of the risk of a hollow force.

It was General Sir Nicholas Houghton, as chief of the defence staff, who first uttered that phrase in public - back in 2013!!!

And yet still no sense today of when (or if) the government will sign off on a new investment plan for the Ministry of Defence.

If billions of additional pounds are not found then ambitions will be curbed and there will have to be more cuts.

@TimesRadio @afneil @afneil High level white collar fraud has now also become risk free. Investment frauds of tens of millions are now not investigated. Fraud is 43% of all crime in the UK and fraudsters operate in the UK with impunity.
