THE DAY AYE AXEMEN CAME FOR THE BUCCANEERS: The Abraka Campus War
In 2001, sixteen-year-old Jude arrived at the university in Abraka with the excitement of a young student stepping into a brand-new future. But instead of finding the peaceful campus life he imagined, Jude was pulled into a dangerous world that would nearly cost him his life.
Introduced to the Buccaneers by his cousin, Jude was brutally initiated and given the deck name Alora Vicious Descendant, placing him at the lowest rank of the group.
But Jude had something that quickly made him valuable—and vulnerable: money.
His father regularly sent him generous amounts of cash, and that caught the attention of a feared senior member known as Pablo the Sailor, a member of the group’s hit squad. Pablo took Jude under his wing, but it soon became clear that his interest wasn’t fatherly. He treated the young student like a personal bank, constantly taking his money while assuring him that nobody would dare touch him.
Meanwhile, Abraka was becoming a battlefield.
The Buccaneers and the Aye AxeMen were locked in a bitter struggle for control, and tensions eventually exploded after a Buccaneer lord was shot dead on the street.
The response was swift: the Buccaneers declared war.
Soon, Pablo returned from one of the clashes with a devastating machete wound across his face. He had reportedly been ambushed by an Aye AxeMen member around the Bembo area.
Pablo wanted revenge.
And the retaliation that followed would push the conflict into even darker territory.
The Buccaneers hunted down an Aye AxeMen member, killed him, and reportedly beheaded him. His severed head was then placed inside a yellow polythene bag and abandoned.
But that gruesome act came with a terrifying price.
For weeks, Abraka campus fell into an eerie silence. Everyone knew retaliation was coming. Nobody knew when.
Then, one afternoon, it arrived.
More than seven heavily armed Aye AxeMen members reportedly stormed through the hostels, believed to have come from outside the immediate campus area, possibly from Benin and Ekpoma.
Gunfire shattered the silence.
Even Pablo the Sailor, who had previously presented himself as untouchable, reportedly abandoned his hideout and disappeared.
Jude was suddenly on his own.
A terrified sixteen-year-old caught in the middle of a war he never truly understood.
With gunshots ringing around him, Jude prayed desperately for his life. He made a vow to God that if he survived, he would change his ways.
Then he ran.
He scrambled over a fence and into a chief’s compound, desperately searching for somewhere to hide.
But from his hiding place, he heard something horrifying.
A fellow Buccaneer known as Fulcan Lucifer had been cornered.
The sound of the attack was enough to tell Jude that his friend was not going to make it out alive.
Jude remained hidden behind a water tank for more than three hours, terrified that any movement could expose him.
Eventually, he managed to convince an angry homeowner that he was the victim of an armed robbery before escaping the area.
He fled back to his father’s house, pretending to be both an armed robbery victim and a malaria patient.
For weeks, he stayed away from Abraka.
Then, when he finally returned, he learned just how devastating the attack had been.
At a local restaurant, a surviving Buccaneer known as Deadly delivered the chilling news.
Four high-ranking sea lords had reportedly been killed during the siege.
Among them were Fulcan Lucifer and a nineteen-year-old freshman known as Tiny Disciple.
And Pablo the Sailor?
He had disappeared into hiding.
For Jude, the events of that terrifying afternoon became a turning point.
What had begun as a sixteen-year-old student’s introduction to campus life had nearly ended in death.
The war for dominance had left the Buccaneers shattered, with young lives destroyed and survivors forced to confront a brutal reality:
On that campus, the price of belonging could be high.
