The reason this story is doing big numbers is because it hits a nerve and it tells us something wider about modern Britain.

Get up and go types and do gooders like this chap are discouraged and even - as in this case - punished by petty authorities. There is such a morass of laws and regulations that doing something as simple as trying to clean up your local area is increasingly being made to feel more hassle than it’s worth because you fear breaking some rule or other. We saw this also with those scrubbing graffiti off the Tube. One can’t help but think authorities feel threatened by these people because they are showing them up in failing to do their job

For them, all power comes from the state.

Citizens who take charge for good also have the capacity to take charge for bad.

For them, entrepreneurs are just criminals who stay within the laws. Innovators destroy the system.

@Ameer_Kotecha Everything is run by impotent middle management types who spend all day making excuses for why things can't be done. When a couple of guys take it upon themselves to fix a problem it makes people wonder why these costly do-nothing government departments exist in the first place.

I clean my local community garden and the neighbour’s association has sabotage my hard work by deceiving me with emails and excluding me from the meetings they have with the council. If I complained about it they still exclude me more. Both parties don’t want solutions.

The Pullens Yard studios people overflowing their bins when there is one empty. Their trash ends up all over the floor and attracts rats to our area. @lb_southwark
