The Israeli Knesset has just approved what is known within Israel as the “Elite Trials” by a majority of 93 members. These are military trials targeting Palestinian prisoners.

Judges will be able to issue death sentences against those accused, and those convicted will never be released even as part of future hostage exchange deals.

The law authorizes the court to impose the death penalty.

It also states that anyone sentenced to death, or charged with an offense punishable by death, cannot be released in any future prisoner exchange agreements.

Indictments are expected to be filed against more than 400 defendants.
A special military court will be established in Jerusalem.
The trials will be divided according to geographic areas — for example, a trial for the Be’eri area, another for the Nir Oz area, and another related to the Nova festival area.

IN PICTURES | Two four-year-old twin children died on Tuesday morning when a fire swept through the Zamimpilo informal settlement west of Johannesburg.

The fire reportedly started when people fled a police and military operation, leaving a stove unattended while cooking. The flames spread quickly, destroying eight shacks.
A 42-year-old man, who tried to rescue the children, was injured and taken to hospital.
