History recorded the Evergreen meltdown as beginning over my objection to the Day of (white) Absence. It actually began in a faculty meeting on May 23, 2016, one year to the day before the student protests/riots broke out at my classroom.

The students *who I had never met* were sent confront me and to demand my firing—as payback. It was orchestrated by FACULTY, in response to my opposition to a proposal to force all faculty to reflect annually, in writing, on their “progress” against their own presumed racism.

I spoke strongly in opposition to the proposal in that 2016 faculty meeting. No students were present. One other faculty member joined me in voting against the measure. All the other professors voted in favor, though several tenured faculty took me aside afterward to say they agreed with me, but couldn’t bring themselves to vote against it in a public forum.

I doubt the students knew why they were sent to confront me a year later. The focus on my opposition to the Day of Absence made it look like an organic student uprising.

“Reflection” is weaponized by tyrants amassing power. Commitment to freedom of speech requires us to oppose compelled speech every bit as strongly as we oppose censorship. Remember, before the Evergreen riots happened, @jordanbpeterson had already become a lightning rod for opposing compelled speech in Canada.
