Students at Lenana School then known as Duke of York, sunbathing on the lawns and relaxing in their dormitory in 1957.

When the School was established in 1949, the then Governor of Kenya Sir Philip Mitchell vacated State House and moved to a house in Ngong to allow the first batch of students to use the official residence as their dormitory until the construction of the school was completed.

The school which was strictly white until 1960, had employed people to do janitorial and laundry work for the students. The students also enjoyed pizza, roast lamb and cupcakes prepared by chefs who had to adhere to strict dietary guidelines in preparing the meals.
