A question keeps coming up in Indian tech circles — why doesn't India have its own Palantir?

This piece argues it is the wrong question, and that the honest answer is more interesting than the one people expect.

First, what Palantir actually is.
- Strip away the spy-thriller image, and its real product is dull — software that takes an organisation's data, stored in twenty systems that don't talk to each other, and joins it into one view.
- The US spy agencies had that fragmentation problem, so the CIA's venture arm funded a company to fix it. That's the origin.

But here's the thing the piece points out.
- India already built infrastructure of the same scale of ambition, in Aadhaar and UPI. And it did the exact opposite of Palantir.

Palantir is a private company.
- The US government hired it to build the system that connects all its scattered data, and over the years it has come to depend on that company completely.
- It cannot easily replace it now.

India did the reverse with UPI and Aadhaar.
- The government built the core system itself and owns it.
- Companies like PhonePe and Google Pay build apps that use it, but none of them owns the system underneath, so the government is not tied to any single one of them.

An 'Indian Palantir' would mean a private company owning that core system. That is the opposite of how India has worked, so the piece argues it would not really fit.

Still, India's army and police have the same problem Palantir was built for. Their data is spread across many agencies that do not share it with each other.

So could an Indian company build something like Palantir just for defence?

The piece says the real hurdle is not a shortage of engineers, or even money. It is trust. The government does not trust private companies enough to hand them work this sensitive.

I will tell you exactly why TN has been fighting against NEET. This state has highest number of private colleges. Mostly politically linked. They all earn a lot on capitation fees, like hundreds of crores every year.

Much of this is lost due to NEET. PM Modi's govt also capped fees, increased seats, and did many things that's hurting them a lot financially. They want NEET gone, Modi gone.

So as they protest for these things, GLISCO-DS has joined the issue and told them to link NEET to Brahmans, Modi (though the man is OBC), and Adani (Jain). They do it faithfully like slaves of the CPC without any brain cells.
