The K-pification of Yoruba words.
“Kpẹlẹ” “Kpanla” What the hell do they mean?
It’s pẹ̀lẹ́, not “kpẹlẹ.” It’s pàǹlá, not “kpanla.”
Not every Yoruba word that begins with p needs an extra k slapped in front of it.
@TamiloreAdewuyi Agreed on points. Lack of metro options handicaps Canadians!
Good luck on the Florida real estate endeavour. You will find many Canadian snowbirds there too (mostly seniors 😁). I enjoy my whenever I’m in FL.
Canadian insurance is unhinged.
I was paying $700 CAD/month for a 2025 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. They just hiked it to $980 - right before I imported the car to the U.S.
No speeding tickets. No at-fault accident in over 13 years.
In the U.S. I now pay $400 USD/month for the Taycan and a 2025 GLS 450 combined, with similar coverage.
It really is all about perspective. Would you rather live in Dallas in a nice $500K home while earning $200K USD or in the GTA where you need $1.7M CAD to be able to afford a comparable house on a $125k CAD income.
Having travelled almost all of U.S states and all Canadian provinces and even lived in 3, the U.S is by far the better option if you are driven by personal finance.
I got tired of sending text to myself.
Phone → Email drafts(lol) → Laptop → Repeat.
So I built Toss.
Open → Pair → Paste. Text lands on every paired device instantly.
No account. No setup. No app store. Just your clipboard, everywhere.
Just toss it.
Understanding How Taxes Really Work (Especially for Nigerians Abroad)
Many Nigerians working in Western countries don’t fully understand how taxation actually works. A common misconception is that the more you work, the more you get back in tax returns.
❌ Wrong!
If you get money back during tax season, it’s not a reward — it’s simply because you overpaid your taxes during the year after factoring in deductions, credits, and allowances. The government isn’t doing you a favour; they’re just returning a portion of your own money that was withheld in excess.
Here’s an example:
If you earned $100,000 in a year and $45,000 was deducted in taxes, and then after filing your return (considering dependents and other deductions) you received a $20,000 refund — it means your actual tax paid for that year is $25,000.
That $20,000 refund isn’t a bonus or a gift — it’s just your overpaid tax being returned to you.
💡 Bottom line: Your effective tax rate is the amount you truly paid in taxes after your refund is applied.
I hope this clears things up for someone today.
@Holarhotimiy@Highteaspeaks@codegidi Sorry deleted my comment. I shared too much but I hear ya! It doesn’t work for everyone but if you have to pay to live, it’s the better route to go.
I’m very familiar with Canada. I own a house in the GTA and lived in Canada for over 14 years.
It still doesn’t change my theory. The current interest rate market is mostly sub 4% today for mortgage in Canada. Up until Covid, carrying a mortgage with 3.5ish percent was very normal in Canada.
The point is that you still come out ahead with a mortgage. It takes a minute to wrap your head around but it’s the best thing to do.
It makes more sense to go the mortgage route.
In the U.S, you can write off the interest paid on your house from your taxes and that’s money back in your pocket.
If you paid for the house outright, you have to think about the opportunity cost of putting down $500k at once. That money is now tied down into the house and you can’t just put it into an investment.
I would rather pay $3k per month while having the opportunity to invest the remaining cash into a fund or some other high yield opportunities than dumping the whole cash because I don’t want to pay interest.
Let’s assume you hold the mortgage for 30 years. The value of $3k in 1996 is not the same value of $3k today. As time passes, your income increases and the value of money goes down and in 30 years you look like a financial genius.
Y’all don’t understand basic math. If you are a high income earner, this works to your advantage.
First, you need to live somewhere. So, buying a house or not, you are paying a certain amount every month.
You can also write off the interest paid on the house from your taxes - this works great especially if you are a high income earner.
Your house should also appreciate in value over time.
@Barthiwu@mans_phlosphy@Adejibo So because Oyo State didn’t exist until the creation of the Nigerian state means that Oyo has a geographical expression hasn’t existed for 800 years?? My brain hurts man. Bye.
Don’t be clever by half. I don’t even care about GRV and his family history. I was just correcting the notion that Lagos was not called Lagos before the 1960s.
Here’s what you said:
“Do you realize Lagos was formed in 1960s? Before then, it wasn’t actually called lagos, but the land existed.”
And … you are wrong.
