Prime Minister @andyburnham and Foreign Secretary @Ed_Miliband : how much longer will Britain remain silent?
For three years the father of my two sons, and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been brutally penalised by his political opponents, in a personal vendetta by Army Chief, Asim Munir, which according to the UN, amounts to torture and which is now taking a potentially fatal toll on his physical and mental health.
He has endured 3 years of solitary confinement. For nearly ten months now his family has been denied contact with him. He has been deprived of the most basic human contact, denied access to books, lawyers and doctors.
The international human-rights standards are unequivocal. Under the UN’s Nelson Mandela Rules, solitary confinement lasting more than 15 consecutive days is prohibited and amounts to torture.
He has endured this treatment not for 15 days, but for three years.
Pakistan’s own Supreme Court has now intervened: ordering comprehensive medical treatment, access to his personal doctor, regular family visits and twice-weekly calls with his sons.
Yet those orders are being defied.
This is no longer simply a Pakistani political matter. It is a human-rights emergency.
He has deep and lifelong ties to Britain. He studied at Oxford University, captained Oxford University cricket and spent years playing county cricket in England. His relationship with this country stretches back more than half a century. His charitable activities were internationally recognised, and include building the only free cancer hospital in Pakistan as well as a university.
His sons, my two boys, Sulaiman and Kasim, are British citizens. They have been forced to watch their father’s health decline from thousands of miles away, prevented from visiting him, denied visas, publicly threatened by government officials with arrest themselves, and even denied court-mandated regular phone calls.
I have repeatedly appealed to the UK government to intervene. Purported attempts at back channelling have evidently failed. The previous Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy informed me in writing that Britain would not intervene if my sons, British citizens, are arrested when they travel to Pakistan to visit their father.
@FCDOGovUK: Britain must now speak out publicly and unequivocally. Demand that Pakistan comply with its own Supreme Court; restore Imran Khan’s medical access, his right to see his family, end his prolonged isolation and uphold his fundamental human rights.
Pakistan is a Commonwealth country. Britain has a long and proud tradition of standing against arbitrary detention, inhumane treatment and the denial of fundamental rights. Those principles mean very little if we invoke them only selectively and neglect them when inconvenient.
This an appeal to the new Burnham government to please now do the right thing.
It has now been around 1,100 days since my father, Imran Khan, was imprisoned, and my brother and I haven’t heard his voice since March. For months, we’ve been denied contact with him. We remain in the dark about his access to healthcare as his eyesight continues to deteriorate. He urgently needs medical attention, and with no family or legal access, we don’t even get any second hand information or reassurance.
I’ve found myself especially missing him recently. I want to speak to him about mundane things like my cricket, books I’ve been reading and what new movies are good. I understand the people of Pakistan want their chosen leader free, but I miss my father more than ever.
But this is not just about a father. It is about Pakistan, and its future. A rigged, authoritarian regime continues to crush political opposition, undermine democratic institutions, and deny millions of Pakistanis their right to freely choose their leaders, whilst terrorising those who speak their beliefs.
I once again plea to the international community to not look away. Silence in the face of injustice only enables it.
Imran Khan has been kept in solitary confinement for six months under brutal conditions, while Bushra Bibi is being held the same way. Their freedom is being deliberately blocked by the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, who refuses to fix their bail hearings.
Imran Khan has made it clear that the judiciary is no longer independent, it is acting like a tool of the government. Judges assigned to his cases are not delivering justice; they are ensuring hearings never happen. The reality is simple: the moment this case is heard, its weak and baseless nature will be exposed, and bail will become unavoidable. That is exactly why it is being stalled. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi continued imprisonment is due to Judge Dogar, who is openly facilitating a government that came to power by stealing Imran Khan’s mandate.
Through Salman Safdar, Imran Khan has sent a message, his wife is being pushed to the edge by prolonged isolation. He has said he can endure this ظلم himself, but she is being broken to force him into submission. The pressure is deliberate, calculated, and inhumane. He said clearly “no deal, no surrender! It is liberty or death.”
Today, I had the honour of speaking to the 47 countries that comprise the @UN#HumanRightsCouncil urging the immediate release of my father @imrankhanpti and all #Pakistan’s #politicalprisoners. Along with this, I want to be very clear. Like my father, I fully support maintaining GSP+ as the people of #Pakistan should never be punished for the actions of its leaders. But the Pakistani regime must also fully comply with the 27 treaties it committed to follow to obtain this benefit, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Convention Against Torture. @UN@ptiofficial #HumanRights #ImranKhanUnlawfullyDetained
Here are my thoughts based on historical facts and evidence around Pakistan's latest attempts to be the mediator between US and Iran, how it impacts Pakistan, and what can we predict based on data.
1. Nothing sells better than Geopolitics
It works like opioid on the masses, delivers escape from governance and accountability to the ruling elite, and provides the surest ladder for a military dictator to take over.
But there are still those, even the smart ones, that fall for these big foreign policy wins, chest-thumping centrality, and strategic relevance, every single time they are fed these lies.
Luckily, some of us have done enough academic work on the subject to identify the patterns and predict how this latest geopolitical con will end, so that people are not duped into it, again!
2. This isn't the first time
Pakistan's geopolitics obsessed ruling elite has played a pivotal role in geopolitics for last 7 decades at an enormous price to the country and its people.
Gen Yahya Khan brokered an icebreaker between the US and China that shifted the power balance in favour of the US during the Cold War. Kissinger literally came to Pakistan, pretended to be ill, and ended up in China. It was Pakistan's biggest geopolitical moment.
But here is a problem that these geopolitical hacks don't mention. While Gen Yahya was brokering peace between US and China in the summer of 1971, he used that as a leverage to unleash tyranny in East Pakistan, and by Dec 1971, neither Nixon/Kissinger nor Zhou Enlai could prevent the collapse of Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh. It was the obsession with geopolitics and arrogance that came with the sense of US support, that turned the top military and political leadership blind. We are witnessing the exact same blindness again today in 2026.
A few years later, the script reset with General Zia who literally was pivotal in bringing down the Berlin Wall, and US winning the Cold War. Pakistan fought as a front line state against the Soviet Union, running one of the greatest proxy wars in history. But it came at a price of Pakistan losing its population to militancy, extremism, and sectarianism that destroyed every fibre of Pakistani society, from inside out. It did make some military and civilian leaders very rich, generational rich. For the rest of the country and people, every geopolitics win added to the misery.
A little over decade later it was time for Gen Musharraf who positioned Pakistan as the front line state fighting the War on Terror, becoming the most critical partner of the US. President Bush was the biggest of Gen Musharraf and saw in him as a "true friend".
The price? Pakistan droned its own people, destroyed the tribal areas including KP, and permanently lost Baluchistan.
Even very recently, Pakistan played a critical role through Doha Accord to help US exit Afghanistan and end the war. We all are seeing live, exactly what price we have paid since then.
Is it going to be any different with another round of geopolitics? Highly unlikely!
3. Short-term personal survival over long term national stability.
Here are some facts. Pakistan's geopolitics is heavily geared to achieve domestic political goals for the ruling elite. The reason because, what we have in Pakistan is an illegitimate regime run by a military dictator, who has imprisoned the most popular public leader for the last 2 years. The lack of legitimacy and credibility requires the military dictator to find external source of strength and support, from the US.
Therefore, since President Trump won the elections, Pakistan has danced to every single tune of the White House. Trump said we want critical minerals, Pakistan announced it has the largest critical minerals reserve in the world and hosted an expo. Trump said he was interested in Crypto, Pakistan presented itself as the crypto capital of the world despite the fact that Crypto remains banned in Pakistan. Trump mentioned Gaza, and Pakistan jumped to become part of the Board of Peace. So now, as Trump is struggling in Iran, the regime in Pakistan is presenting itself as the mediator to solve all problems.
The fundamental problem here is, in hopes to appease President Trump and survive in power, Pakistan's military regime has given up on sovereignty and national interest. Instead it has prioritized and peg itself to the American interest. It is comfortably happy with a pat on back from the President Trump, as long as it survives in power, but the country is up in flames with terrorism, economic crash, inflation, political breakdown and judicial collapse.
What regime trolls, and geopolitics experts don't get is that geopolitics only serve the ruling elite, a military dictator, not the country or its national interest, and certainly not the people. Their big wins in the geopolitics, are big losses for the people and their freedoms and livelihood back home.
4. So what we can predict?
If a hostile intelligence was to undo Pakistan, this is exactly what it would be doing right now. What is bizarre is that, Pakistan has already gone through exactly like just over 50 years ago, and faced a collapse. Yet, another military dictator is going through the exact same script all over again, expecting a different outcome. It's literally the definition of madness.
Every piece of data, evidence and signal is suggesting, that unless major course correction, Pakistan is facing another collapse, and the regime will walk right into it chest-thumping and cheering over it as a big win.

“The judges in this country should be ashamed of themselves. Time and time again we have gone to the judiciary. But they have sold their souls for their paid personal privileges. They have sold their integrity. They know they cannot break me, so they turn to my wife. How they can allow this inhumane treatment to Bushra BiBi, simply to blackmail me. She spends 24 hours a day in isolation, except for 30 minutes with me per week - and even that is often ignored. It is unislamic to harm women, children and the elderly - and their motives are plain and clear. The judges are responsible for the justice in a society. They should be ashamed of themselves.”
Illegally Incarcerated Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, speaking to his sons on phone from Adiala Jail - (March 21, 2026)
Yesterday I spoke to my father. He asked me to relay the following message:
My sons Sulaiman & @kasim_khan_1999 applied for visas in January (again… ) to allow them to visit their father @ImranKhanPTI in Pakistan. The Pakistan consulate states that online visa processing normally takes 7–10 working days. It has now been 60 days. This despite the public promise that they could safely travel there to see their father after 4 years, made by both Defence Minister @khawajaMAsif to @mehdirhasan & PM spokesperson @mosharrafzaidi to @SkyYaldaHakim
Meanwhile, they are not allowed to speak to him on the phone, nor send him a letter. They haven’t seen him since 2022 after he was shot in an assassination attempt.
This is an appeal directly to Pakisan’s PM @CMShehbaz to please allow Imran Khan’s two sons to see their father asap, particularly since, by all accounts, his health is in decline.
