Some interesting Developments happening due to new and exotic materials. I would say that the landscape of Quantum would be impacted a lot positively with more such discoveries around materials suited for Quantum Computing, Communications, or sensing.

Researchers at Princeton University in the US have discovered the Quantum Communications utility for a rare-earth element: erbium. Erbium is good at emitting and absorbing photons at wavelengths used in the telecommunications industry, so photons can travel long distances with little attenuation in standard optical fibers.
