BIG: Iran has spent months preparing for a potential US attack on Kharg Island.

After US strikes in March, Iran reinforced the island with additional troops, air defenses, and shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles (MANPADS).

It also deployed anti-personnel and anti-armor mines, including along beaches where US forces might land.

I understand why the US Navy has chosen not to equip Flight I of FF(X) with MK41 for schedule reasons. MK41 VLS integration necessitates extensive design changes to include the cooling, heating, fresh water, air pressure, and perhaps most importantly, the deluge system for safety.

The MK56 VLS presents a lower tier alternative that would give the ship credible medium range air defense with ESSMs. The Raytheon VLS system is fairly modular and doesn’t require any of ship services of the MK41 except electrical power. It is also much lighter weight, and could probably be integrated into Flight I without causing delays. HII had proposed this in their frigate concept video with variant FF4921.

There may be reasons I’m unaware of as to why the navy has not chosen to use MK56 on any of its ships. But it seems like Flight I of FF(X) would be significantly enhanced with ESSMs in addition to the MK70 container launchers that are already planned. Backfitting MK41 Flight I ships seems unlikely due to cost and lack of drydock availability.

カーナビや地図アプリ、天気予報など生活と密接な関係にある、宇宙。防衛の分野でも、自衛隊の指揮統制や情報収集に不可欠な領域です。宇宙は遠く、イメージしにくい領域であるからこそ、防衛省・自衛隊はこの指針に基づき透明性と予見性をもって政策を進めていきます！

Deepwater Drilling Is Engineering Under Pressure. 🌊🛢️

A semi-submersible rig is built for deep and ultra-deepwater drilling.

Everything has a job:

🔹 Submerged pontoons reduce wave motion
🔹 Dynamic positioning keeps the rig on target

This is not just a floating platform.

It is a full offshore factory operating above the seabed, holding position in harsh seas, and drilling through thousands of meters of rock.

Offshore oil is not simple extraction.

It is precision engineering at extreme depth.

Footage shows the Chinese military deploying multiple warships including Type 056A guided-missile frigates Wuzhou (Hull 626) and Tianmen (Hull 631), as well as a Type 054A guided-missile frigate Dali (Hull 553) to conduct close interception and expulsion against the Dutch Navy’s frigate HNLMS De Ruyter (F804).

The Chinese Navy’s frigate Dali (Hull 553) issued verbal warnings in English to the Dutch NH-90 helicopter. And the J-16 fighter jets armed with PL-10 air-to-air missiles also took part in the expulsion operation.

On May 27, the Dutch Navy’s frigate De Ruyter (F804) illegally intruded into the waters of China's Xisha Islands and repeatedly launched its shipborne helicopter to intrude into China's territorial airspace, said Senior Captain Zhai Shichen, spokesperson for the Chinese PLA Southern Theater Command, on May 27, 2026.

By taking necessary measures including verbal warnings and warning electronic interference, the navy and air force troops assigned to the Chinese PLA Southern Theater Command expelled the Dutch frigate in accordance with laws and regulations.

The spokesperson stressed that the Dutch side's actions have seriously infringed upon China's territorial sovereignty, maritime and air security, contravened international law and basic norms governing international relations, undermined peace and stability in the South China Sea, and were highly likely to lead to misunderstandings and misjudgments.

“We firmly oppose such acts and solemnly demand that the Dutch side immediately cease its infringement and provocative actions. The Chinese military will maintain a high state of alert at all times and resolutely safeguard China’s national sovereignty, security and regional peace and stability,” the spokesperson added.

35 African countries have taken Chinese loans for energy projects.

This map is what energy geopolitics actually looks like.

Oil.
Gas.
Coal.
Nuclear.
Solar.
Hydro.
Transmission infrastructure.

China has financed all of them, across the entire continent, from Morocco to South Africa.

Resource-rich countries get oil and gas financing Nigeria, Angola, Gabon, Congo, Chad, Sudan.

China funds the extraction of commodities it needs, using loans that are often collateralised against future production.

Infrastructure poor countries get transmission and distribution financing Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, DRC, Zambia.

China builds the grid, then owns the relationship with the government that depends on it.

Everywhere else gets a mix solar, hydro, coal whatever the bilateral deal required to get the contract signed.

This is a 35 country energy supply chain built on Chinese capital, Chinese contractors, and Chinese terms.

The loans come with conditions.
The conditions create leverage.
The leverage compounds over decades.

Africa holds some of the world's largest reserves of critical minerals, oil, and gas.

China now has loan relationships with the governments sitting on top of them.
