(4/4) No society or institution is perfect, but I like seeing growth in communities that I am apart of. Everyone should continue to listen, understand, then respond. Not listen to respond. Cheers, my dudes.
(1/?) Thought of something today. One thing that I am hyper aware of that often occurs, especially at my school, is when people, in an attempt to support marginalized groups, speak over them. I love seeing people who are passionate about activism.
(3/?) However, I am happy to say that there are people at Glendon who do call it out, and that there are people who listen and understand why this is problematic. Including faculty, alumni, and current students.
(2/?) But I myself can recall multiple times where people spoke over me about my own experiences and justified it with support. Obviously this doesn’t just happen in academic institutions, this is in society. What I often struggle with is calling it out.
My birthday isn’t for a while, but I am so excited because my mom got us tickets to The Lion King live, which was my first live performance I attended with her at age 3. So sentimental, and my favourite show to this day!
@vicmartin_18 My friend has been recommending metal straws! I havent had the opportunity to buy one, but I agree that I’m not particularly fond of the paper ones either! Also, if you like iced drinks at Starbucks you can get Nitro Lids which are strawless!
(2/2) Moments like these enforce the importance of culture, language and representation. I can’t imagine how much more secure I would have felt as a child if I didn’t feel so inherently different. Educators, academic and otherwise, I encourage you to acknowledge culture in class.
(1/2) My students have been teaching me some Ojibway and Cree and I’m butchering the pronounciation, but the joy on their faces from hearing an adult, a role model, a teacher, taking an interest in their culture and language, completely lights up the room.
First time in the gym since January. I used to go 6 days a week, 1-2 times a day, now I’m restarting from the bottom. Can’t wait to see this progress!!!
