There is nothing—I repeat, nothing—to be gained from reading a book called “The Sin of Empathy.” Do not waste your time or money.
Instead, I suggest you read these fours books: Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
They’re free. Easy to find. And full of Divine Empathy.
Grateful for @martensmatt1 lecture and sharing of wisdom at @fpu tonight! Thanks to our Criminology and our Christian Ministry & Leadership programs for bringing us this opportunity!
I’m at a cancer treatment center getting my 27th dose of radiation. My doctor recommends 35. @UHC refuses to pay for more than 28. I’ve fought them for weeks to get full treatment approved. This is my Hail Mary to hopefully get them to reconsider.
Theology 101: Every year of my life in ministry is convincing me more and more that the future of Christianity is not bigger, louder, and more famous. It’s smaller, quieter, and mostly unknown.
Contrary to American evangelical wisdom that got us here in the first place, we won’t get through the next four years by just “reading your Bible and praying everyday”.
We’ll get through it by doing what God tells the Jewish exiles in the Babylonian Empire to do (in Jeremiah 29): plant gardens, eat their produce, live life to the fullest, and seek Shalom of the land we’re in.
And we’ll only see Shalom in America when the American Church has decolonized its theology to prioritize justice for all our marginalized neighbours.
“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
@daTempesta I love how they made each other crack up. And Vicki Lawrence’s line at the end was so hilariously unexpected that it just killed the others! Beautiful!
I propose we move from “you can’t be a true Christian if you vote for ________”
to…
You can’t be a true Christian if you don’t follow the Sermon on the Mount.
