Imagine an 1860s town in the midst of a gold rush.
Property prices have surged as a result of a temporary event.
Then more people start arriving than homes can be built, pushing up rents and by extension home prices even further.
Then as the temporary factors supporting the market are set to mean revert, people complain they don't want prices to fall.
That is thematically what has effectively played out in Australia since 2019.
Some folks want their artificially inflated prices to stay, even though the factors supporting them were largely temporary.
