Lots this morning about troops storming the beaches on June 6 1944, but spare a thought too for the dozens of little Royal Naval Patrol Service ships doing myriad crucial jobs including sweeping mines, hunting subs, laying dan buoys and creating smoke screens. 1/2
🚨 VICTORY INCOMING 🚨
According to reports in today’s @thetimes, after months of campaigning led by @KemiBadenoch & the @Conservatives team, it looks like @RachelReevesMP is going to scrap @@UKLabour’s plan to hike fuel duty
🇬🇧⛽️ A huge victory for drivers across the UK!
@DanielJHannan@James_R_Martin Regardless of what Starmer did or didn’t know about the vetting surely the real issue is he appointed somebody to a key job who already had a very dubious history and had resigned twice from government already
In the midst of an energy crisis the government still refuses licences for more domestic oil and gas, forcing us to rely too much on imports. Why do they turn down more jobs, more tax revenue, more growth and less world CO 2 from home production?
In 2022 the UK spent 50% more on defence as a percentage of GDP than the NATO average excluding the US. Last year under the new government we spent less. Labour is falling behind our allies badly. You cannot defend the country on promises of future spend.
The government took the UK from 3 rd highest NATO spender on defence relative to GDP to 12 th. It needs to concentrate this spend on improving the defence of our islands and bases. The PM should not make rash promises to defend Europe when he spends so little.
Why can’t Ed Miliband just be honest?
He is desparate to shut down the North Sea so he can fly around the world preaching to other countries to do the same.
Sacrificing our energy security, jobs, and making us more dependent on dirtier imports for his own moral superiority.
Obviously we should not cede the Chagos Islands. At the same time, we should sue Mauritius for the return of the sum - around £100 million at today's prices - that it pocketed in 1965 in return for promising to drop all claims to the archipelago in perpetuity.
Report from France's @BFMTV that the @MarineNationale aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle @French_CSG is to curtail its deployment in the Baltic Sea to sail for the Eastern Mediterranean. https://t.co/df5yK2GfAV
We've been campaigning against the Chagos Islands Surrender from the very beginning.
And we won't stop until this terrible deal is dead and buried.

CHAGOS UPDATE: Iain Duncan Smith has briefed me on his meetings this week with the Department for War, State Department, NSC and the White House on stopping the Chagos Surrender.
My Shadow Foreign Secretary @pritipatel is flying to Washington this weekend for further meetings.
The Conservative team will do all we can to stop this terrible deal, force the PM into another U-turn and protect our national interest! 🇬🇧
Well I wasn't expecting to see this today! French Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and its escort through a gale in the Strait of Gibraltar heading west. @NavyLookout
Let us no forget that this morning Labour sent out its people to argue there was no need for any kind of investigation into Mandelson and to bat away suggestions he lose his peerage.
Neither line last through lunch!!
