Our open letter addressed to the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and resultant global protests.
We will not stand for performative solidarity Queen's University Belfast. Queen's must do better! #BLM✊🏾
As Black History Month comes to an end, we are very pleased to have the Vice Chancellor accept our request and contribute towards it with this short video.

Also a quick TW/CW for vile racism in the comments of the @BelfastLive tweet about the article. If anything to me, those comments just proof the huge issue we have in NI on talking about racism- but especially on how quick people are to silence young Black voices.
There is an urgent need for @QUBelfast@QUBVChancellor to meet the demands of our Black students with strong, radical & active commitments to change as opposed to empty words.
Proud to stand with @qubacs in this fight. We MUST dismantle the power structures that oppress us ✊🏾
it’s about actively dismantling the power structures that oppress us.
In the words of Angela Davis - “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept “.
We want to see radical & real commitments to change and for our demands to be taken seriously by our university & senior management. Solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter isn’t just about recognizing our pain and suffering,
We have requested that we be included in discussions relating to our demands in the open letter.
We will continue to keep you updated on the resulting correspondence.
Thank you!
The Vice-Chancellors response to our open letter.
The support we’ve received since we released this open letter has been nothing but encouraging and we are extremely grateful!
(A thread)
While we are glad that the VC has adopted the standard approach of acknowledging the receiving of our letter, we look forward to seeing Queen’s take tangible actions towards tackling racism on campus.
Incredibly powerful open letter from the Afro-Caribbean Society (@qubacs) calling out Queen's University's role in perpetuating structures of racial oppression within the academy, performative solidarity, and the urgent need to decolonise the institution. Solidarity.
read this. feel enraged that students at our university have to undergo this treatment and abuse.
we need to be doing so much more to protect Black students at university - performative solidarity will not work.
Our Black students are in pain 💔 You cannot read this letter and not feel the pain, or see the the racist climate within @QUBelfast but also in a wider societal context in NI. I strongly urge our Chancellor @HillaryClinton & @QUBVChancellor to listen to our students & reflect.✊🏾
Our Black students have suffered in silence and are constantly let down by our QUB. Over the past 2 yrs the number of Black students I have had come to me with horrific instances of racism but are unwilling to report it due to the sheer lack of trust they have in QUB is just 🤯
SO proud of @qubacs for calling out the rampant racism in @QUBelfast ✊🏾
Queen’s has avoided actively tackling conversations on race for too long despite so many efforts that have been made, and to follow that with performative solidarity is UNACCEPTABLE 💥🙅🏾♀️
Hey guys!!! The #Digitalgarage from @google#googleuk @goodthingsfoundation is going to be joining QUBACS to deliver a workshop on Building Your Personal Brand Online. #Belfast. Make sure you’re there! Also there would be free pizza available 🍕🍕🍕.
