Public spending for private schools is increasing faster than public school spending on a real per-pupil basis
When public schools are facing real spending cuts in BC, why are we funding private schools?

@RogersHistory I vividly remember Estelle Morris saying it’s not possible to be exceptional for every single moment of your day, yet teachers are expected to do just this.
In an IEP meeting last week, I had to strongly advocate against an instructional coach's suggestion to set a reading goal focused on nonsense words. She argued that the data indicated he struggles specifically with nonsense words and fluency.
It doesn’t have to be this hard!
If you wear some version these shirts or you put your child in one.... teach what it means... explicitly.
I took my boys to a jump place this weekend and watched as a child wearing one of these shirts looked at my son with disgust as my son was being a bit odd.
My son is autistic, but his autism can be "invisible" at times, as he has learned how to be with peers (through lots of therapy and scripting). He is an incredible friend, but sometimes doesn't register the reactions of others.
He was bouncing and giggling on a dodgeball area, and a child was just looking at him and sneering and giggling at him with a friend.
My eyes welled up, but in that moment, I was just glad my son didn't register the reactions of those kids.
Choose kindness, but teach kindness explicitly.
SHOW kindness in front of your kids, not in just an altruistic act, but in how you interact with all kinds of people on a daily basis.
Kindness isn't just charity, it is all encompassing... it is empathy and understanding and an effort to see all people as mini universes of their own struggles and positive attributes.
My son may not be "cool," but he will be kind. I will teach him.
So in short, graphic tees are great, but don't let them be false advertising.
Please do not use Teachers Pay Teachers for ANYTHING to do with #OrangeShirtDay. Not only is TPT NOT audited for equity and cultural appropriation, creators are literally making money off of Indigenous trauma. I will continue to share free vetted resources this month! 🧡🪶
Drumroll, please! I'm thrilled to announce my new book coming Spring 2025! 📚This hefty resource companion to 7 Mighty Moves is PACKED with templates & tools to help you implement the 7 moves. I even wrote some decodables! I can't wait to share what I've been working on! 🥳😍☺️
Today marks the beginning of Reconcilation Month.
Be mindful that this can be a retraumatizing time for Indigenous people.
Teachers, beyond Orange Shirt Day, be sure to also teach Indigenous resilience and excellence year round.
Our existence is resistance. 🧡🪶

Not surprised a lack of consistency is a big concern. Consistency is a powerful contributing factor. When we’re not on the same page at school & district levels, it creates too many unknown variables to affect substantive change. #BCLit2024
“Keeping the status quo in how we are teaching students when it’s not meeting the needs of our Indigenous students is colonial.”

Session 3 of the Empowering Literacy series with @DyslexiaCanada started off with very welcome opening remarks from @Dave_Eby! The Premier’s presence and acknowledgment of the hard work BC educators are doing to implement evidence-based literacy practices were/are so appreciated. Thanks again to the Premier for joining us and for the $30 Million, 3 year investment in effective literacy practices for all #bced students.
Our topic during this session was #UniversalScreening: What it is and is not, what measures are evidence-based and why, and its role in the #MTSS model, which is the topic of our 4th and final session next Wednesday, June 12th.
In this session we were also joined by panelists Tina McDonald and Geraldine Lawlor from @CMSD82, who shared about the impact of the changes they, and the dedicated teachers in their district, have been making as they move to align literacy assessment and instructional practices with the scientific evidence about literacy and learning. It was a fantastic and inspirational discussion!
We continue to welcome newcomers from #bced (and beyond) and you can catch up on any missed sessions by visiting Dyslexia Canada’s YouTube channel. Session 3 will be posted soon!
