After publishing hundreds of articles about Cambridge academic Jason Arday, many rightwing media outlets are studiously avoiding any coverage of the rather worse allegations against Oxford academic Lola Salem
"Some of us bear the scars of standing up to.. racism"
A reminder that Neil Coyle was suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party for racially abusing a journalist.
But he says jEReMy coRbYn, so the media never challenge him about that
@axiochrono@nikicaga I've seen it suggested that the idea is to discredit democracy as an alternative by making people default to the idea that public votes are rigged.
@thundolfgretler@UBERSOY1@Szabadsag1956 Marginalised groups are seen by empowered ones as hypersensitive precisely because those jokes are correctly seen as harmful if you lack social power, in a way that's often imperceptible to people who don't.
@thundolfgretler@UBERSOY1@Szabadsag1956 I'll go one further and say: a good heuristic of cultural hegemony is the ability to weather being the butt of a joke
@Camellia_Bi@discordspies I've had to push back on most of my partners thinking this way, and women I know who are careful with consent have relayed to me that their partners are almost always pleasantly surprised by it.
@Camellia_Bi@discordspies Women doing things like drugging strangers is fabulously rare, but women getting pushy or offended when their romantic partners turn them down for sex on the assumption that "men are always up for sex" isn't that uncommon.
@discordspies This maps 1:1 with the ongoing issue with antisemitism too. In the general case, people are not going to accept that a rule is morally sacrosanct if they can clearly see that it's selectively enforced.
@mxdxlynx@redliptruth@IRRATIONAL_PULL Especially since the consequences of accepting that it is a big deal are, well, exactly the reactions we're seeing now.
@discordspies I keep on saying that this is an inevitable side effect of autistic women defaulting to flirting as a shortcut to social skills. You can't expect people to act normal in the presence of an abnormally high number of false positives.
@discordspies (and the thing is this isn't usually an innocent misunderstanding -- it's about establishing a precedent that they can flirt with you for attention and you're the bad guy or "misunderstanding the situation" if you try to act on it)
I'm always aware of it in the back of my mind, but every now and then, I'm suddenly violently reminded of how a large chunk of the 'commentariat' are this wonderful mixture of thick as mince and deeply unpleasant.
