🟤 INDICATIONS.

Tranexamic acid is used to treat or prevent excessive blood loss from many causes, including:

🔸major trauma
🔸postpartum bleeding
🔸surgery
🔸tooth removal
🔸nosebleeds
🔸heavy menstruation

It is also used for hereditary angioedema.

🟣 MECHANISM OF ACTION.

Tranexamic acid is a synthetic analog of the amino acid, lysine. TXA works as an antifibrinolytic agent by reversibly binding to 4 to 5 lysine receptor sites on plasminogen.

This decreases conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, preventing fibrin degradation to maintain the structure of the fibrin matrix.

🟢 SIDE EFFECTS.

🔹color vision changes
🔹blood clots
🔹abdominal pain / discomfort
🔹seizures

TXA can cause seizures because the drug binds to glycine receptors, resulting in a decrease in inhibitory current. This reduction in anion conduction increases neuronal excitability in the CNS.
