On this day 23rd June 1912 Alan Turing was born. The 'father of modern computing', Turing was an amazing mathematician, computer scientist and cryptanalyst whose contribution to defeating the Nazis, and computing, will never be forgotten. 🏳️‍🌈

The molly-house subculture of London was discovered mainly because of a quarrel between two men that took place at Wright's molly house, after which one of them got revenge by helping agents for the Society for the Reformation of Manners to infiltrate such clubs.

In the early 18th century, Thomas Wright, a wool-comber, kept a molly house in Beech Lane (now the underpass in the Barbican), where he kept rooms for the entertainment of gay men and sold ale to them. #LGBTHM20 #queerheritage

The men socialised, dancing while someone played the fiddle, and singing bawdy songs, while some went into a separate room to have sex.

The Clapham Common bandstand was a popular gay meeting place in the 1920s. 'In 1926 police asked the LCC for "material assistance" in controlling "indecency on Clapham Common" by "improving the lighting of the Parish Path, Bishop's Walk and vicinity of the bandstand." #LGBTHM20

During the Monte Carlo visit, Vita wrote in her diary, "I love her so much." Upon Rosamund's departure, Vita wrote, "Strange how little I minded [her leaving]; she has no personality, that's why." Their secret relationship ended in 1913 when Vita married.

Helen Woolf's, or Wolff's, School for Girls was an exclusive day school in Mayfair. In the late 1890s, pupils at the school included Violet Keppel, Vita Sackville-West and Rosamund Grosvenor. Vita later had affairs with both women. #LGBTHM20 #queerheritage

Her first affair began with Rosamund, who was four years her junior. Lady Sackville, Vita's mother, invited Rosamund to visit the family at their villa in Monte Carlo; Rosamund also stayed with Vita at Knole House, at Rue Lafitte, and at Sluie.

The Union Jack Club was an Armed Forces Club in Waterloo for members and veterans of the British Armed Services and their families. During World War II, the club gained a reputation as a refuge for homosexual servicemen to socialise and find intimacy. #LGBTHM20 #queerheritage

As the Second World War and National Service increased the number of men using the Union Jack Club, its notoriety rose exponentially. After the war it was known as both a safe place to take partners and somewhere to find casual sexual encounters, the club became almost legendary.

Their amours are carried on in the open street; but to prevent any surprize, a watchman, or more, is placed at the avenues. And the advantages that arise to these guardians of the night, makes them not a little contentious who shall be placed upon that station."

Sherborne Lane was a gay cruising ground during the 1770s. For example, the Stamford Mercury for 27 August 1772 reported: " Among the many places of resort within the metropolis for these infernal wretches, that part of Sherbone-lane, is not the least. #LGBTHM20 #queerheritage
