Border Patrol and ICE should do their jobs to make sure our borders are secure and violent criminals here illegally are deported. Both organizations need real accountability and should not be operating a detention facility in North Carolina. They are killing and detaining American citizens, including people with no criminal records and it must stop.

The new Republican majority on the North Carolina State Board of Elections are considering adoption of a new rule at their meeting today in Raleigh that would allow a simple majority of each county's board of elections to throw out any mail-in ballot over any kind of technicality.

Examples: a voter puts their ballot in the wrong enclosed envelope, checks the wrong box, or makes a smudge on the paper. The Republican majority on their county board of election could throw out your vote.

Currently, throwing out a mail-in ballot for violations requires a unanimous, bipartisan vote by the county board. This change would make it a partisan vote. Every county board of elections in North Carolina has a Republican majority today, so in effect, this would mean allowing those Republican members to decide which mail-in votes will count.

Fun fact: Democratic Rep. Julie Von Haefen and most of the Democratic caucus has introduced this exact measure every year in the NC state legislature for the last 5 years running. Every time, @mikefor35's Republican leadership has killed it without a hearing.

Only once it was introduced by a male Republican at high risk of losing his seat was it even allowed to be heard in committee. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@dogwoodblooms Now seems like a good time to mention that @NC_Governor had nothing to do with the lack of a NC booth. That’s entirely the fault of the Republican majority in our legislature who haven't managed to pass a budget in over 1,000 days so we had no f&#%ing 💰for a booth.

Clarification:

1. The change from 90 days to 365 is for candidate eligibility, not voter eligibility.

2. The ban on paid petition gathering is for payment per signature not payment in general.

On Friday evening, the Republican leaders of North Carolina's state legislature dropped a big, unannounced, 36-page omnibus bill stuffed to the brim with new voting restrictions and elections changes.

This thing is a voter suppression wishlist. Just some of its major provisions:
👉 Total ban on encouraging voter turnout: State and county board members are prohibited from any public statement "encouraging or promoting voter turnout in any election"
👉 Grants the Republican State Auditor total discretion to audit all machines, county offices and personnel involved in any election
👉 Reduces campaign finance transparency: the bill significantly raises the dollar thresholds for required reporting of dark money contributions or media expenditures, waiving reporting for the rest
👉 Requires voters to register with a political party a full year before voting in that party's primary election (up from 90 days)
👉 Total ban on any ranked-choice voting in any primary or general election statewide
👉 Strips some overseas voters of their eligibility to vote in any state elections
👉 Partisan staffing: changes up to 25 professional staff at the State Board of Elections from career civil staff to partisan political appointees
👉 Bans paid petition gathering
