@RogerLMartin More of the planning v strategy thing here I feel. Someone once said a strategy is a forward facing set of integrative choices… and it needs a theory. That’s your chartering concept, IMHO. Helping with that discipline and coherence. It’s very different than cascading objectives.
Had a great quote from an exec buyer that echoes this. “If they smell like a sales person, and I don’t know them, they aren’t getting through” referencing how they’re filtering their inbox.
the goal of sales is not to sound like sales …
this is why some of the best commercial talent come from non-traditional sales backgrounds
the rest read same book and course commoditizing you … ‘let’s jump on a call and review your needs’ 🫣
@infamouswill007@Strange_G She weaponised propaganda - under the guise of "communication". A chunk of NZ got to experience the what is was like to be "othered". This has widespread implications... for lots of things.
@EthicalSkeptic Hey, avid follower here. Any thoughts on the cause of that spike in early 2020? This isn’t COVID. Is this the first signs of COVID responses impacting?
Startup sales is in a bad spot. I'll come out and say it.
1. We have talent from startups that pre-maturely scaled, joining companies and bringing really bad habits.
2. We have talent that has NO IDEA how to run sales outside of order take.
3. We have sales reps with rose-colored glasses littering false positives in CRM.
4. We have Founders pre-maturely hiring, hoping some salesperson has secrets to understanding how their product fits into the market.
5 . We have everyone leveraging AI tools writing the exact/close to the same opener. Everyone sounds the friggin' same!
6. We have folks out here selling their contacts for lots of $$/equity in hopes Founders fall for some silver bullet.
7. We have Founders able to sell a BIG DREAM, but unable to understand where to start.
8. We have folks default to demo/solution and unable to do proper Discovery since they no idea what questions to ask.
9. We have VP of Sales joining companies without doing proper due diligence on whether the company achieved PMF, and trying to hire there way through it.
Getting a job in startup sales 10 years ago was really hard. It took me months to break in and prove myself.
Somehow, in the name of scale, we threw so much out the window. It's part of the game; I also get that.
Also, apologize if my passion is screaming. I live and breathe this.

@jeremyutley Thanks mate. Yeah he was a great guy. Unfortunately, his sickness corresponded almost perfectly with your book launch. So I was much quieter than I would have been normally! The team all love it btw. Great work. Shout you a beer when you're next down this way.
Wow. Life eh? My Dad died last week. A very large presence leaving a very big hole. And then this happened...https://t.co/r8MTssCl2a Look at the byline. Jeff Knight is a great mate of mine & this is from his Dad. We knew they knew one another...but this is so much more. 💕
@JasonCParis@BenTM_Journo Great response. You will be judged by what you do, not what others have done. Good luck. Love watching Kiwi companies push the boat out.
