Dr. Daniel Pauly, professor at @UBCoceans, says that the countries from which fishing fleets emanate have devastated their fish stocks and have to go elsewhere, competing with each other. via @Reuters https://t.co/8bvRU6pdrh
Loving these lush seagrass fields in #PixarLuca! Seagrass beds are an incredible carbon store and nursery fish habitat and they deserve all the love they can get
masterful and truly apocalyptic storytelling takes us into the aftermath of a ship fire and the flood of chemicals and plastic “nurdles” killing fish off the coast of sri lanka

We sent a paper on ecosystem impacts of bottom trawling to a conservation journal. It was rejected without review, with advice to send it to a fisheries journal. Bet that wouldn't have happened with forestry or farming. Sick of terrestrial bias.
It's that time of year again—we're talking about BC spot prawn season! 🦐 Show your support and buy local this fishing season. What's your favourite way to cook spot prawns? 📸: @BCSpotPrawns

Great news reading that Canada's #Budget2021 adding funding to ocean protection and committing to protecting 25% of our oceans by 2025. Our oceans are too important to ignore!
I met a whole menagerie of memorable marine friends thanks to #OceanConsvnUBC: @RandomBioFacts's Spike the sea cucumber, @meganyuUBC's Mr Haggy the hagfish, @kellanwhoop's Harry the herring 💙
Conservationists & educators tell stories about Harriet the Herring 2 share how important these #BigLittleFish are to life in the Salish Sea!

Individual effort is advertised heavily in conservation, like avoiding plastic bags and straws. Well, compared to the actual scale of ocean destruction, individual effort doesn’t accomplish much. The government and corporation takes the big bulk in pollution #OceanConsvnUBC
#DeepSeaMining will be permanently banned in the Northern Territory in Australia after an almost decade-long moratorium on the destructive practice run out, the territory government has announced.

Driftnets are harmful to endangered and threatened species because they can get caught as bycatch. This type of fishing gear was banned by the UN over 25 years ago but it's frustrating to hear they're still in use
Lots of optimism and pragmatism from our #OceanConsvnUBC class today as we shared our key takeaways from the course, eager to see the positive changes we'll have a chance to help shape here and beyond
.@sabinejessen on post-graduation careers for students: there are opportunities to enact change in both government and in NGOs! Room for both and important role for each. Great q from @SamRam_IAm#OceanConsvnUBC
This was something we got to chat about during our field trip to Steveston, trolling is much less destructive since it involves trolling fishing lines through pelagic regions of the ocean vs. trawling which disrupts life occupying the ocean floor #OceanConsvnUBC
