Early in the USA vs Bosnia game yesterday, a goal kick was played, a Bosnia player was standing in what looked like a clearly offside position, and the US defenders stopped. They expected a flag but none came. Play continued and Bosnia nearly scored.

Some fans online called it a mistake by the officials. It wasn't.

IFAB's Law 11, Section 3 is unambiguous: "There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from a goal kick, a throw-in, or a corner kick."

It has been in the Laws of the Game for decades. It applies to all three restarts, and the word "directly" is doing important work in that sentence.

The moment a teammate touches the ball first after the goal kick, normal offside rules apply instantly. But if it goes straight from the goalkeeper's boot to your feet, it does not matter where you are standing.
