The year was 2016. I was doing my siwes at KRPC, we had closed from work and got in the bus. On the way home, a fellow siwes student, Samuel, asks me, "Do you know what Taqiyya is?". I had this blank expression on my face and replied "NO". I didn't even bother to look it up as I
Thank you for asking sincerely.
In Islam, fasting is not only about hunger and thirst. It is a spiritual journey of self-control, healing, and returning to Allah. So yes, intoxicants like weed are forbidden because the Prophet (s.a.w.) Muhammad taught that every intoxicant is harmful to the mind and soul.
But committing a sin does not automatically cancel a person’s fast. His fasting is still valid if he avoids food, drink, and intimacy during the day. However, the sin can reduce the reward. Islam focuses on growth, not perfection.
Ramadan is like a hospital for the heart. Some people come in already healthy. Others come in broken, addicted, or struggling. The goal is not to shame them but to help them heal step by step.
The fact that he still prays Taraweeh and still fasts means he has not given up on God. And in Islam, that is powerful. One day, that same Ramadan routine may be the reason he quits completely.
We believe God’s mercy is always bigger than our mistakes. So instead of judging, Muslims are encouraged to advise with kindness and pray for each other because sometimes, the person struggling today becomes the strongest tomorrow.
That is the beauty of Ramadan.
