हमने ह��ंदी उपन्यासों की दो सूची बनाई थी। सबसे प्रिय उपन्यासों की सूची आश्चर्यजनक रूप से 1973 में प्रकाशित तमस पर रुकी। पिछली अर्धशताब्दी की दस रचनाएं और जोड़कर यह संख्या बीस हुई। साथियों के मंतव्य से अवगत हुआ और एकाध तगड़ी अनुशंसा के अतिरिक्त यह सूची मुकम्मल मानी गई। गुनाहों का देवता इसमें शामिल करने की मांग उठी और कितने पाकिस्तान को। मैं एक बार लोकप्रियता और स्वीकार्यता को ध्यान में रखकर गुनाहो�� का देवता सम्मिलित कर लेता हूं। फिर भी यह कहना चाहता हूं कि धर्मवीर भारती का उपन्यास सूरज का सातवां घोड़ा उससे लाख गुना अच्छा है। कुछ और कृतियां सम्मिलित हो सकती हैं जिसमें पुनर्नवा (हजारी प्रसाद द्विवेदी), मृगनयनी (वृन्दावन लाल वर्मा), रेखा (भगवतीचरण वर्मा), सोना माटी (विवेकी राय) नीला चांद (शिव प्रसाद सिंह) आदि प्रमुख हैं। यह सब ध्यान में रखते हुए बीस श्रेष्ठ उपन्यासों की सूची मैं प्रस्तावित करता हूं। आप की सम्मति इसे पुष्ट करेगी।
