“My name is Engr. Hassan Karaye, one of the Kwankwasiyya scholars sponsored by His Excellency, Sen. @KwankwasoRM, to study at the College of Aviation Technology, Zaria.
In 2013, we were a group of 15 students whom you sponsored to study Aeronautical Telecommunications Engineering, based on your vision and commitment to developing young people through education.
At that time, the programme was not widely known in Kano. Whenever I mentioned Aeronautical Telecommunications Engineering, many people did not understand what it meant. They were more familiar with terms such as Communication Engineering or Telecommunications. However, the programme you sponsored us to study in Zaria was a specialised engineering discipline focused on the systems and equipment that support safe aircraft operations.
Today, we are professionals working in Nigeria’s aviation and airspace management sector. We are responsible for maintaining critical aviation equipment and systems used for aircraft navigation, communication, take-off and landing.
Before any aircraft can take off—including a presidential aircraft—the relevant aviation systems and equipment must be properly checked and cleared. We are among the professionals responsible for ensuring that these systems are functioning properly and that the aircraft can safely operate within Nigeria’s airspace.
Some of the equipment we maintain includes radar and other ground-based aviation systems that help us monitor and manage aircraft within the airspace. Whenever there is a fault or technical issue, professionals like us are called upon to identify, troubleshoot and repair the equipment to ensure the continued safety and efficiency of air operations.
Sir, your support did not end when we completed our studies. You continued to stand by us and pursue opportunities for us to serve our country. In 2015, when we came to Abuja, you personally connected us with the then Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika. You collected our documents and ensured that they were delivered to the appropriate authorities.
At the time, applicants were normally required to travel to Lagos for documentation. However, through your intervention and recognition of us as beneficiaries of your educational programme, arrangements were made for us to complete the process in Kano. Eventually, we were given the opportunity to secure employment and contribute our expertise to Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Today, whenever you travel through an airport, there are professionals working behind the scenes to ensure that the systems supporting safe air travel are functioning properly. Many of us are among those professionals, and we continue to benefit from the opportunity you gave us.
Your investment in education has produced professionals across different areas of the aviation industry. From pilots and engineers to cabin crew and other aviation personnel, many young Nigerians have benefited from the educational opportunities you provided.
Sir, whenever people travel safely by air, they may not know the professionals working behind the scenes to make that possible. But we know that the opportunity to acquire the specialised education that enabled us to serve in this sector came from your vision and commitment to education.
We remain deeply grateful for the scholarship you provided, the opportunities you created for us, and your continued efforts to ensure that the education we received translated into meaningful careers and service to our country.
Thank you, Sir, for believing in us and investing in our future.”
