@RogersHistory I'm currently 3 months out of changing and it's been the best decision I've ever made in my life. I am so much more calm. My mind isn't whirring constantly with 'what ifs'. My previous life unsustainable and it's no wonder I was in a constant cycle of burn out.
@LWoods0722 I do understand that they are supposed to be supportive. But the system has harmed staff to the point where they feel they cannot be trusted to be left alone, every lesson is a performance and unsustainable. 100mph 100% of the time will only lead to one thing...
@LWoods0722 The culture is wrong in so many schools though. I once (as HOD) was asked by SLT to chat to an extremely good teacher, who was unapologetically old school and was flagged up to me during 'learning walks' for 'sitting down too much'. How is that supporting good teachers?
@LWoods0722 @Deb_Allen You are supposed to be a senior leader. If this is you 'leading by example' then you are teaching staff that burnout is OK and it's fine not to look after your physical / mental health. Being a martyr to the system is not admirable.
@LWoods0722 As an ex ogat employee I can say that 'learning walks' were a source of anxiety and led to me leaving teaching. Teachers want to be trusted. Also doesn't help that in SLT meetings 'cause of concern' spoken about regarding teacher performance in learning walks.
@LWoods0722 This is why I've left tchng after 8yr. Took on AAP role which meant I was working 12hr days - no amount of coffee could help the fact I had very little time to myself - ultimately burnt out and now quit tchng altogether. Constant learning walks also max'd my anxiety.
May we remember and celebrate the lives of Barnaby Webber, Grace Kumar and Ian Coates.
Nottingham lost three wonderful and cherished members of our community.
My heart goes out to all who loved them. May they rest in peace.
@GeoPolLecturer@RogersHistory 1) reduced class sizes
2) increased PPA
3) increased funding for more support staff / TA's
These things would definitely help
@Ms_Robson__@RogersHistory Behaviour is so different now to when I started teaching. Before I left, I can't remember the last time I got through a lesson with no behaviour issues. It shouldn't be this way. I felt sorry for the poor kids that wanted to learn.
@RogersHistory On the nail as usual, Tom. I've left due to all the aforementioned reasons and will never, ever return unless there is a drastic change. The system is broken. I left my teaching career broken.
Hi all,
Now that the Year 11 pupils have left we will be monitoring how your spend your gained time. This is not extra PPA. Most of you will be used to sand the gym floor before we get the Art Department to varnish it. Bring some old clothes, a mask and some sandpaper.
Thanks x
@campbellclaret can I just say, my dog is very impressed with your new book. He has never been on as many walks since I bought the audiobook. Absolutely brilliant - says much of what I have been thinking about the current political mess but not as eloquently put as you do!
@MrsSmawar I am one of those teachers that has had enough. I went in to work every day to 'make a difference' but was unable to do so due to a variety of factors: OFSTED bureaucracy, poor student behaviour, poor parental attitudes, lack of autonomy due to MATs - the list goes on. It's sad.
