These officials need to get a grip. It's no more acceptable to restrict cooling in summer than it is to limit heating in winter

In celebration of the new heatwave, here's a Public Information Film from the 1970's that you might just recognise. It's one of four films featuring two characters enjoying the good weather: Joe, complete with a handkerchief on his head, and his bespectacled wife, Pertunia, who has a tongue like Gene Simmons from Kiss! 

Joe was voiced by Peter Hawkins (Bill & Ben, etc) and Wendy Craig voiced the first three films as Pertunia, followed by Bridget Forsyth. The films were made by the same people who brought us Willo the Wisp!

 Bit of Public Information Film trivia for you. Did you know that Charley the cat from the Charley Says series, was voiced by Kenny Everett!

It covers physical logistics and constraints

Eg why does North Sea oil go to European refineries but North Sea gas all comes to the UK

Why the gas market balances once a day vs every half hour for electricity

How bills are constructed etc

There's also a whole section in the notes on how the electricity market evolved after privatisation including how the Power Pool of England & Wales worked and why it was replaced by NETA (then BETTA)

Only the wholesale price is set by gas

The wholesale price is c40% of the bill we pay

Renewables subsidies are almost all higher than the wholesale price so if the wholesale price falls the subsidy element rises. This is a separate charge on the bill

Other charges on the bill are
Backup for renewables
High cost of connecting renewables
Extra balancing costs for renewables

In the autumn energy execs set this out in detail to the DESNZ Select Committee. They were very clear....

Spotted this radio set in a shop in Marseillan today, a Le Regional 57M. Note on the top of the dial Droitwich, then on 1500m carrying the Light Programme when this was built. Radio 4 long wave closes in the early hours tomorrow (although a looped anno continues until Tuesday)
